CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A candlelight vigil is happening Monday night for Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail last month.

The vigil is set to be held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, at the East/West Boulevard Rail Station in South End, the place where she was murdered.

Monday’s candlelight vigil will mark 30 days since her death.

Light rail stabbing
Zarutska was killed on Friday, Aug. 22, just minutes after sitting in front of the man accused of attacking her on the Charlotte light rail, according to an affidavit.

Jail records showed that 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. was charged on Thursday, Aug. 28, with murder in Zarutska’s killing. An affidavit published on Aug. 23 and obtained by WBTV on Aug. 28, accused Brown of stabbing Zarutska in the throat.
