Anesthesiologist Explains: What It’s Like to Wake Up

Danesthesia

Sep 17, 2025

What does it really feel like to wake up from anesthesia?
Is it peaceful? Confusing? Scary? Or maybe just… weird? In this video, I’ll take you inside the recovery experience — from general anesthesia, to regional anesthesia (spinals, epidurals, nerve blocks), to sedation. You’ll hear about the strange sensations, the funny patient moments, and the science behind why everyone wakes up differently.

As an anesthesiologist, I’ve helped thousands of patients through this exact moment — and today, I’m breaking it all down for you.

When I've awakened from sedation, I've kept my eyes closed and wished it was possible to get some more sleep.
Oh, the woes of the sleep-deprived.
[H]umanity repeats the worst mistakes of previous generations and ... every free, prosperous civilization will eventually be destroyed by that small fraction of its people who find no satisfaction in anything but anger.

The few times I've been placed deeply under anesthesia for a longer surgery it will take me days to truly wake up.

Light anesthesia...wake up quickly and clear as a bell.
