Also relevant ... Jimmy Kimmel's own words about "free speech", from a few years back when Roseanne was cancelled by ABC -

“And ABC, to their credit, didn't waste any time; they canceled her show today. I'm not a fan of censorship, but this wasn't about free speech...

- it was about consequences for saying something vile. You can say what you want, but networks don't have to pay you to say it. ... You can't just blame Ambien for that.

Actions have consequences, and ABC made the right call."

Well Carson stayed mostly non partisan publicly, but during the Reagan years he definitely came right on the edge if not a bit over with his jokes and obvious facial reactions when the audience didn’t respond as he wanted. But both Carson and Leno were probably the best at even handedness and being non partisan. That all went in the crapper when the new late night ‘comedians’ took over.
