Authorities Are Dealing with Threats Around Charlie Kirk’s Memorial Sunday

The apprehension of an armed man at the stadium site of Charlie Kirk’s memorial as well as reported threats against key speakers scheduled at the high-profile event Sunday is sparking fresh fears of political violence.

The individual detained was carrying a gun and a knife when he was detained at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Friday and falsely claimed to be a member of law enforcement, numerous outlets have reported.

A memo obtained by ABC News revealed that authorities are “tracking several threats of unknown credibility” against people expected at the event — specifically President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and members of the Kirk family.

According to the memo issued to the top federal law enforcement agencies:

    Violent extremists and unaffiliated lone offenders may view the memorial service or related events as attractive attack targets due to the attendance of these individuals, other senior US government officials, state and local government officials, and political activists and due to major international media attention.

Local law enforcement in Glendale and the U.S. Secret Service are investigating the individual, who was observed acting suspiciously at State Farm Stadium, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told Fox News Digital Saturday.

Authorities have not released the identity of the man they say was armed with a gun and a knife and presented “inactive law enforcement credentials,” according to several reports.

“The individual was approached by Secret Service and stated during the encounter that he was a member of law enforcement and that he was armed,” Guglielmi said. “The individual is not a member of authorized law enforcement working the event and is currently in custody.”

Sunday’s memorial, called “Building a Legacy: Remembering Charlie Kirk,” is being held at the stadium used by the Arizona Cardinals. It is expected to draw some 100,000 people.

Charges announced for man found with gun, knife at Kirk memorial site

Joshua Runkles was identified Saturday by the Arizona Department of Public Safety as the armed individual whom the Secret Service arrested at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, ahead of Charlie Kirk's memorial service.

Runkles was taken into custody on Friday.

He was charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer -- a felony -- and carrying a weapon into a prohibited place, which is a misdemeanor.

I want to add a note of clarity here. This individual was doing advance security for a known guest planning to attend the memorial service tomorrow. We do not believe this person was attempting anything nefarious, however the advance was not done in proper coordination with the TPUSA security team or US Secret Service. Also important to note that this was before the site had been fully sealed and locked down. Every precaution is being taken to ensure everyone’s safety.

'Don’t be a fool:' TPUSA warns potential protesters ahead of Charlie Kirk memorial

Authorities are preparing for protests and possible disruptions as tens of thousands are expected to gather Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, for the public memorial of Charlie Kirk.

The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was assassinated earlier this month while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Fox News correspondent Jeff Paul reported that crowds at TPUSA’s Phoenix headquarters have been growing for days, with supporters leaving flowers and messages. Many are traveling from across the country to attend the memorial, where President Trump and Vice President JD Vance are slated to speak.

While security is expected to be heavy, Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet appealed for the event to remain peaceful. “Don’t be a fool. And also, you’re going to be outnumbered. We want this to be a celebration of Charlie’s life. Respect our friend. Respect what he meant to us,” Kolvet said.

Kolvet added that overflow space will be available at nearby Desert Diamond Arena for those unable to enter the stadium.
