I oppose Government censorship of speech.

I do, too.  But that's not what happened here.  Not even close.  And this story is proof of that.  Because if you take the time to actually get past the headline, you will see that Kimmel is continuing to exercise his free speech rights.  QED.

Jason Bateman: We Can’t Let Kimmel’s Show Be Pulled, This Is About ‘Freedom of Speech’

Thursday on NBC’s “Today,” actor Jason Bateman said the suspension of comedian and late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel was “troubling,” adding, “you just can’t stand by and let stuff like that go on.”

There have many television celebs that have had to retract a statement and apologize. Even The Shreiw.

Kimmel chose not to. He's been spouting his lies and vitriol for so long that I think he thought he was untouchable. Well, Jimmie, I hate to tell ya this but late night tv is creating a  monetary drain on networks. (see Colbert) So a sane person wouldn't go out of their way to tick off what audience they had left.

If I were the big networks, I would just put on reruns of old sitcoms. Buying the rights would be cheaper. And alot of people might tune in. Of course most people stream these days.

How Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension Went Down: Sponsor Panic, a Defiant Host and a Painful Call

Disney’s Bob Iger and Dana Walden wanted to know how Kimmel was going to address the situation. Sources say he planned to defend what he said rather than "kowtowing” to the outrage. Disney thought that would fan the flames.
September 18, 2025 1:31pm

On Wednesday, Disney caved to pressure from various partners and benched Jimmy Kimmel Live! Ultimately, the decision was Bob Iger’s and Dana Walden’s — but there was more leading up to it than previously reported.

On Monday’s episode of his long-running ABC late night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel mocked MAGA Republicans for scrambling to distance their own ideologies from those of Charlie Kirk’s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson. In the days following Kirk’s murder, the left and the right were quick to point fingers at each other over Robinson’s perceived political leanings.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during the monologue.

The joke kicked off a “social-media shitstorm,” a source with information tells The Hollywood Reporter. It died down — temporarily.

But almost immediately after FCC chair Brendan Carr’s appearance on Benny Johnson’s podcast, the storm of shit “became a bigger swirl.”

Within hours, multiple ABC station owners held calls with senior Disney leadership expressing their concern with the comments, a second source tells THR.

Inside of ABC, “multiple conversations” with Kimmel were had at the “executive level,” the first person says, though the talks had not yet reached Bob Iger or TV head Dana Walden. The execs wanted to know: How was Kimmel going to address the situation on Wednesday night’s show?

The answer was not satisfactory to management, sources say. Meanwhile, the advertiser calls began to roll in and then the big affiliate conglomerates, Nexstar and Sinclair, threatened to preempt the show. The second source says that the blowback was snowballing enough that had ABC not acted, Kimmel’s show would have been dark in a large swath of the country, even beyond the Sinclair and Nexstar territories (including in the Washington, D.C., metro area).

His show aired on Tuesday.  Twenty-four hours later, he followed his Monday comments by saying on air, "Many in MAGA-land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk."

Disney is losing subscribers over Jimmy Kimmel. Why fans say they hit 'cancel'
Story by Reia Li, John Tufts and Anthony Robledo, USA TODAY NETWORK • 9h

USA TODAY
Moment Jimmy Kimmel's Charlie Kirk remarks put his show in jeopardy

People across the country are calling for a boycott of Disney streaming services after ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel's show from the air indefinitely on Sept. 17.

Walt Disney-owned ABC confirmed on Wednesday, Sept. 17, that "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" would be pre-empted indefinitely" following comments he made regarding the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on a Monday, Sept. 15 episode.

The shock move came after Nexstar Media said on Sept. 17 that it would not air episodes of Kimmel's show across its ABC affiliate stations and after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr seemingly threatened ABC, Disney and Kimmel during commentator Benny Johnson's YouTube show.

The decision prompted social media users to post pictures of their cancellation receipts under the hashtags #CancelDisney and #CancelDisneyPlus.

Either there was a threat or there wasn't. It is my understanding that Carr didn't communicate with ABC until after Nexstar had dropped their bomb on ABC, and that that was the motive (critical loss of ad revenue). The show had supposedly been pre-empted before Carr or the FCC spoke with anyone.

So, which was it? (Is USA Today casting aspersions on the administration?)--Was the decision financial (if so, just say so), or was it because someone in the administration threatened ABC?

I'm good with the former. After all, it is a business and that is a business decision.

The government might want to issue warnings when a broadcast is flirting with (or crossing over into) rule violations, but heavy handedness in this wins no converts and alienates those who do value the 1st Amendment. If you don't have a warrant, don't knock, and let the material they present wreck their train.

What I would really like to see is a clearer demarcation line between commentary (opinion) and material presented as 'fact'.

Just to be clear, the FCC hasn't actually taken any action yet

All Carr did was to remind everyone that, according the FCC rules already on the books, broadcasters have binding conditions attached to their licenses ... like not knowingly broadcasting false info

And Carr didn't create those rules, Congress did, many years ago, long before Donald Trump showed up

** BTW, one reason why the Govt. takes the "broadcast hoax" threat so seriously might be because of Orson Welles' "War or the Worlds" broadcast (Halloween 1938), which scared the crap out of millions on the East Coast and started a near panic ... ??

Jimmy Kimmel and Disney Working to Reach Compromise to Bring His Show Back

Insiders caution that no agreement is in sight but discussions continue as Kimmel weighs concerns about staff job losses if show ends
By Cynthia Littleton, Brian Steinberg

Jimmy Kimmel and Disney are working toward reaching a compromise that would allow “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to return to ABC.

The veteran host’s business and legal representatives are deep in discussions with Disney and ABC leaders in the hopes of finding a path to a compromise that would allow for the return of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” according to three people with knowledge of the situation.

The host has made no public comment since the show was abruptly pulled from its regular 11:35 p.m. slot on Sept. 17, with Disney saying only that the program would be off of its schedule “indefinitely” after one of the biggest owners of TV stations in the U.S., Nexstar, said it intended to pre-empt airings of the program following remarks the host made in relation to Trump and the slaying of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Sinclair, another large station owner, said it too was taking Kimmel off of its stations. Kimmel has hosted ABC’s late-night franchise since 2003 and in recent years has become a key face of the network as the host of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” the Academy Awards and other specials.

There is no guarantee Kimmel and Disney will come to terms on agreement to return to the airwaves, these people cautioned. Nor is it clear where Kimmel’s mindset stands on what he would and would not accept from ABC as conditions of taking the stage again for “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” It’s understood that Kimmel is mindful of the effects a shutdown would have on dozens of his production staffers as well as vendors in Los Angeles who work on the show, according to one source with knowledge of the situation. The host is also aware some staff and crew members are still digging out of the financial hole created by the months-long writers and actors strikes in 2023.

I can imagine ABC doing this, but Kimmel will have to eat some crow and make a public, on-air apology with a promise to "sin no more."  He will have to adjust his material to try to get enough viewers to restore profitability or he'll be out again in a season.

Gone with the wind are the days when ABC can simply subsidize a loss leader.

Just to be clear, the FCC hasn't actually taken any action yet

All Carr did was to remind everyone that, according the FCC rules already on the books  .  .  .

To be clear, it wasn't "everyone" he was reminding.  He didn't issue a letter to the MSM or issue a policy statement through Departmental channels.  No, nothing like that.  Carr simply made a comment on someone's podcast, a comment that most people knew nothing of until AFTER Kimmel was removed from the ABC lineup.

That's right, boys and girls.  As usual, the Dems have invented this narrative after the fact.

"Gee, we found out a day later that Carr said something on a podcast, so we'll use that as the reason ABC took action"

It's going to require more than just an apology (that Kimmel probably won't do anyway).  No, he'll stick to his guns because he probably knows the viewers aren't coming back.

It's quite telling how leftists are willing to operate at a loss during an election year if it advances their propaganda.  Colbert and Kimmel should have been off the air 18 months ago.  Yet ABC and CBS kept them on air while continuing to hemorrhage cash because they hoped trashing Trump would keep him out of the White House.  Now that the election has passed, they can no longer justify the loss.

Where were Reiner and Bateman when the Dems were censoring Twitter and deleting personal Facebook accounts?  My BIL (a minister) lost his entire Facebook content because some government censor deemed him a threat.
Where were they, laughing their asses off over it and high-fiving with the other socialist elites. Neither Kimmel or anyone has a right to be on network TV, let alone to spew bile over the air. These elitist turds think that even though his shows ratings continue to fall, and he puts ABC/Disney n a serious legal liability situation he has a “right” to be on the air and say whatever hateful comments he wants while calling them “jokes”, that he should be paid millions of dollars to do it.

Let Kimmel do what every conservative(maybe once?) like Tucker or Megyn Kelly cancelled by the left did and create a successful podcast. The problem is you have to actually be creative and give people something they actually want to watch/listen to, more than just Trump and Conservatives bad, hate hate hate.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
I oppose Government censorship of speech.  What goes around comes around.

People have God-given rights to be wrong, stupid, rude, crass, classless, tasteless, etc.

If ABC affiliates want to take action of their own accord, that's perfectly okay.  But, this also is an example where corporate over-consolidation in the public media space could lead to indirect Government censorship - where corporate interest to appease Government regulators could lead to corporate censorship that aligns with the political interests of those in power.

I, too, am protective of our First Amendment Rights.

You are free (with a few limitations) to say what you want.

But there is nothing which would require anyone to provide you a microphone or paper to print your opinions on. Even my posting here, ultimately, is at the discretion of the owner and moderators of this site.

If I don't like that, I can start my own site.

And I agree, that overconsolidation of Media leads to a narrowing of the viewpoints tolerated in that media by not only those in charge of the editorial stance of those outlets, but the corporations who are paying to reach those audiences through advertising, assuming no overweening interests that fund things for solely political or other nefarious purposes.

Lest we forget, ABC made a business decision, shades of the very Capitalism the Left rails about.
No wonder. When people reach saturation and the sewers of the airwaves back up, it's no longer profitable.

Yet no one heard it until AFTER Kimmel was axed.  And once they heard it, they lied by saying that Carr censored ABC.  Utter bullshit.

Actor James Woods bashes Jimmy Kimmel in a series of X posts

Actor James Woods is bashing Jimmy Kimmel in the wake of his boot from late night TV, calling him an “unfunny” money loser who should “eat s–t” — and ripping his supporters as “douchebags.”

On Thursday, the Emmy winner — who has 5 million X followers — feigned support for the embattled funnyman, and then went in for the knockout punch.

“We’ve all made jokes at Jimmy Kimmel’s expense. But Mr. Kimmel is a fellow artist, and I am in fact heartbroken to see the way he has been treated. I believe he is, in his heart of hearts, a good and decent fellow, devoid of malice and hate,” he begins in the post, which racked up 5.3 million views and 235,000 likes.

“Just kidding, Jimbo. Eat s–t.”

On Friday, Woods, 78, also shared The Post headline “Stephen Colbert declares ‘Tonight we are all Jimmy Kimmel’ in solemn show dedicated to canned late night host,” on X and quipped “He’s right. You’re all douchebags.”

That same day, the “Once Upon a Time in America” actor posted a clip of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” where the failed vice presidential candidate and frequent visitor to China called Kimmel’s firing “North Korea-style stuff” that “has no place in America.”

“Guys, enough is enough. Kimmel was fired because his show was a massive money loser. He was supposed to be funny, and no one was laughing. It couldn’t be simpler,” Woods posted alongside the video....

Here's Alec Baldwin making a try of it:

Gone with the wind are the days when ABC can simply subsidize a loss leader.
Well, ABC's parent Disney continues to subsidize movies that lose big money. So am unsure whether the days are indeed "long gone".

I do think Disney actually expected to make money with crap like live action "Snow White" though.

Good point.  Snow White could have done fine with a lower budget but the main Star sabotaged it with her big mouth.  Star Wars had a necessarily huge budget but the Executives blew that one with the PC storyline.

ETA: They are already charging well north of a hundred bucks for a kid's ticket into D'Land....

They would have, too, but an actress couldn't keep her yap shut.

I could rattle off a dozen other Disney big budget movies that lost money over the past several years like Marvel and Star Wars lineups that had no similar problems with loud mouth stars.

They lost money intentionally as they had no appeal.

Agreed, they have a long way to go to regain the respectable reputation they once had.  Sacking Kimmel is but one small step and they had to be dragged, kicking and screaming to this.

Yup. You can't even stream "Song of The South" anywhere.
