The moon is drifting AWAY from Earth at a rate of 1.5 inches per year – and it could mean days become 25 hours long, scientists warn

It's the reliable celestial companion that's stuck around for 4.5 billion years.

But the moon is slowly drifting away from Earth, a physicist has revealed.

Dr Stephen DiKerby, a researcher in Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University, said the moon is getting 1.5 inches (3.8cm) further away from our planet every year.

As a result, the Earth's rotation is also slowing down, he revealed. And it means that – over time – days could get longer.

The revelation helps explain why around 70 million years ago, near the end of the time of the dinosaurs, Earth's days were only 23.5 hours long.

As the moon continues to move further away, the number of seconds, minutes and eventually hours in a day will also gradually increase – but it's likely none of us alive today will be around to notice it.

'Don't worry, these effects are so small,' he wrote on The Conversation. '1.5 inches per year compared to a distance of 239,000 miles (384,000 km) is just 0.00000001 per cent per year.

'We'll keep having eclipses, tides and days that last 24 hours for millions of years.'

Noticed that too. According to my high-school science book, millions/billions of years ago, when volcanos and lava were everywhere, the moon filled the sky because it was so close to Earth. This is no longer taught in public schools because it debunks what the grifter Communists call "Climate Change".

The Earth has been changing and evolving since the beginning of time. It is NOT some kind of 'new' development. We are talking about a possible 1 degree change over several decades. This is a joke. At various times, the Earth has had 'Climate Changes' and global upheavals that the current day Global Warming people cannot possibly comprehend.

Wouldn't the moon have to be gaining orbital speed or the earth have to lose mass in order for the moon to drift further away?

Normally the opposite happens. Drag slows things down and they slowly fall.

NASA has been planning a moon landing all year. They have said they want to get there ASAP (as soon as possible).
They say they are going to quickly build a moon-base.

NASA knows what's going on. They want to get to the moon before it takes off, before it is too late.
They want to get there and be established there so they can hitch a ride to wherever it is going ...

Material as in significant?

Solar winds do cause drag on the planets. It accumulates over time. It slows the earth's orbit around the sun by about 30 ms each year.

Apparently, the earth's rotation which is significantly faster than the moon's orbit around the earth are lightly coupled dragging down the rotation of the earth and speeding up the orbit of the moon.
