The cold civil war

We’re in one. The only question is in regard to current temperature. This site has been writing about the idea of a “cold civil war” going back to at least 2017 and to work by the late professor Angelo Codevilla.

Scott quoted Prof. Codevilla back then and I reprint here:

America is in the throes of revolution. The 2016 election and its aftermath reflect the distinction, difference, even enmity that has grown exponentially over the past quarter century between America’s ruling class and the rest of the country. During the Civil War, President Lincoln observed that all sides “pray[ed] to the same God.” They revered, though in clashing ways, the same founders and principles. None doubted that those on the other side were responsible human beings. Today, none of that holds. Our ruling class and their clients broadly view Biblical religion as the foundation of all that is wrong with the world.

Codevilla was writing in the early days of Trump 1.0. We are still in the early days of Trump 2.0.

Today, I would draw the battlelines a bit more broadly. As we see in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk assassination, the anti-Kirk “elite” (and their clients) appears to go beyond the core group of progressive leftists, antifa types, and Democratic Congresswomen, to encompass a large share of the population that depends (directly or indirectly) on a government paycheck. These include schoolteachers and administrators, medical professionals, media people, etc.

Richard Fernandez wrote on the topic back in June 2024 in his Belmont Club column. He framed the opposing sides as “globalists” v. “America first.”

This national vs universalist aspect explains why open borders and cultural identity have taken on such importance to both sides, as have multilateral institutions.

Marjorie calls for national divorce.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene🇺🇸
@RepMTG

There is nothing left to talk about with the left.

They hate us.

They assassinated our nice guy who actually talked to them peacefully debating ideas.

Then millions on the left celebrated and made clear they want all of us dead.

To be honest, I want a peaceful national divorce.

Our country is too far gone and too far divided, and it’s no longer safe for any of us.

What will come from Charlie Kirk being martyred is already happening.

It is a spiritual revival building the kingdom for Christ.

But it will happen on the outside, not within the halls of our government.

Democrats are hardened in their beliefs and will flip the switch back as soon as they have power.

And, if you are expecting Republicans to fight against evil, with the power they currently possess, and end this once and for all, you are going to be extremely disappointed.

This week Congress will be voting on another CR - Biden’s budget that FUNDS TRANSGENDER POLICIES, NOT our own Trump policy budget that funds what you voted for.

We had 9 months to get it done, but for reasons I don’t understand or agree with, it wasn’t the priority.

Government is not answer, God is.

Turn your full faith and trust to our Almighty God and our Savior Jesus.

Tighten your circle around your family and protect them at all times.

I will pray for the left, but personally I want nothing to do with them.

From the article:
"America is in the throes of revolution. The 2016 election and its aftermath reflect the distinction, difference, even enmity that has grown exponentially over the past quarter century between America’s ruling class and the rest of the country."

The murder of Charlie Kirk strikes me as being "the John Brown moment" of the coming American conflict (and eventual separation)...
