Newsom’s Fossil Fuel Flip-Flop Marks ‘Significant Reversal’ On Oil Drilling
Amid soaring gas prices and political risks, Gov. Newsom is expanding oil and gas drilling in California.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is completing a flip-flop on oil drilling, which he tried to stop but is now planning to expand in Kern County, thanks to the impending threat of skyrocketing gas prices in the state. [emphasis, links added]


As Breitbart News reported last month, Newsom backed away from his long, climate-change-inspired crusade against oil drilling as refineries threatened to leave the state and prices threatened to rise to $8 per gallon.

In 2021, Newsom had all but doomed the oil and gas industry in Kern County with a moratorium on fracking permits, effective in 2024. “The climate crisis is real, and we continue to see the signs every day,” he said.

But in 2025, Newsom has struck a compromise with the oil industry that would see the legislature pass a bill that would allow more drilling in central California — and environmental groups are reeling from the change.

How will drilling for more oil help Governor Greaseball deal with high gasoline prices caused by California State laws and regulations on refining and gasoline blends?

High California gas prices aren't due to a lack of supply of crude oil.  They are due to California requiring its own, proprietary gasoline blend; and compliance with California State refining regulations.

This is a vapid attempt to fool the unwashed masses.  Frack all you want, Governor Greaseball, but that won't help your gasoline price problem.  You still don't understand basic economics.

Right. I am about as far in the industry from the folks who make the CAPEX decisions as one can get.

However, would I invest my company's money in exploration in an environment traditionally hostile toward drilling, production, and refining as California? Especially when the people calling the shots have their eyes on an election and political advancement?
Decisions that can be reversed in a New York second are no guarantee of ROI, in fact, quite the opposite, and 'guarantees' aren't worth the paper they are printed on.
Unless and until there is a serious change in management in California, Venezuela might be a better option, and that isn't saying much, given their track record.

Sorry, California, there are too many far better options for places to drill with your State in the state it's been, and one desperate, pandering politician is not enough bait if you were giving the leases away.
