Ottawa is counting on copper to be a nation builder — and Canada has to play catch-up

Ottawa's list of fast-tracked "nation-building" projects includes the development of two copper mines — to source one of the world's most important natural resources as global demand soars and supply challenges persist.

Such projects "must strengthen Canada's autonomy, our resilience and our security. It must have clear benefits for Canadians," said Prime Minister Mark Carney during the Thursday announcement.

Enter copper, the world's third-most widely used metal and a conduit for all things electrical. The federal government is recommending regulatory approval for the McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine Project in Saskatchewan, and an expansion of the Red Chris Mine in northwestern B.C.

The critical mineral is used to build electric vehicles and other green energy products. But demand is skyrocketing amid the global boom of data centres, which house the hardware that powers artificial intelligence.

Canada is "a major mining power, and copper is one of the most important natural resources of this century," said Vince Beiser, the Vancouver-based author of Power Metal: The Race for the Resources That Will Shape the Future.

"All of our digital gadgets need electricity. How does electricity travel? How does it get from the dam or the solar power farm to your home? It travels on copper," he said.

You may find 'nobility' in a savage. But never forget that his first instinct is to kill you.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

A green govt like Ottawa cannot realize full value in mining as it
1. Is fundamentally anti-development of resource (think California)

2. It enriches 'red' provinces which elites suffer greatly to do.

Ottawa can count on the Liberals to be a nation destroyer.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Manitoba may even join in. The damage is done.

Why should those provinces work their butts off to be treated like second class citizens by Ottawa?

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Whoa, slow down, support for separating hasn't even hit 50% yet in Alberta, never mind the other provinces. (I live in Calgary, and people just aren't screaming for separation right now.)

And even if Alberta does decide to separate, the other provinces (except Quebec, of course) would probably stay in Canada.

It seems to be growing. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba contribute about 1/3 of Canada's GDP, and Albertans (and others) seem to increasingly feel that not only are they being held back by policies from Ottawa, but they are being unfairly taxed to pay for them.

It will be on the ballot - Watch and see...

I am just across the border from you, down in Kalispell, MT, and disabled, but even in such a state, I hear about it all the time, from your compatriots... Just last week in front of the Walgreens, out of the blue. And I have friends in Edmonton and Calgary, and points south, mostly cattlemen and horsemen and country folks, and they all are saying the same. Same with hill folk back up in inland BC... I don't hear much from Saskatchewan - I rely on what I have been told.

Well, I didn't draw the map, but they keep putting Murkowski in office...and the way she votes isn't exactly red.

Seems to me they should have included it with the lower 48, though.
