"The IDF and ISA [Shin Bet] conducted a precise strike targeting the senior leadership of the Hamas terrorist organization," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

Israel conducted an air strike on Tuesday to try and assassinate Hamas leaders in Doha, two Israeli officials told Axios.

Why it matters: The assassination attempt in the Qatari capital comes amid a renewed U.S. effort to reach a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. This was the first time Israel has ever struck inside Qatar, which is more than 1,000 miles away.

* Qatar, a key U.S. ally, has been a primary mediator in these efforts since the October 7 attacks.


Driving the news: Qatar's prime minister met on Monday with Hamas leaders in Doha and pressed them to accept the new U.S. proposal.

* The strike took place when Hamas leaders met to discuss the Trump administration's proposal.

* A source with knowledge said some Hamas leaders even traveled to Doha from Turkey for the meeting.

* A senior intelligence official said "the entire Hamas A-list was in the building" when the bombs struck. No casualties have been confirmed.


What they're saying: "The Israeli air force conducted a precision strike against Hamas leaders who were involved in terror attacks against Israel and are directly responsible for the October 7 attacks," the IDF and the Shin Bet intelligence service said in a statement.

* Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the strike was "a wholly independent Israeli operation. Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility."

* The U.S. embassy in Doha said it had issued a "shelter-in-place" order due to reports of missile strikes.


The Qatar foreign ministry condemned the attack as "reckless" and "cowardly" in that it "targeted residential buildings housing several members of the Political Bureau of Hamas."

* This criminal assault constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and norms, and poses a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents in Qatar," the ministry said in a statement.

* "The Ministry affirms that the security forces, civil defense, and relevant authorities immediately began addressing the incident and taking necessary measures to contain its repercussions and ensure the safety of the residents and surrounding areas."

* It added that "investigations are underway at the highest levels".

Israeli fighter jets struck Qatar’s capital, Doha.

An Israeli airstrike in Doha killed Hamas leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, and three senior members of the group’s leadership, Al Arabiya reports, citing sources.

Al Hadath states those in the targeted building included Hamas’s Gaza chief, the head of its foreign office, and three political bureau members.

They were discussing a ceasefire proposal from Donald Trump.

The operation, "Peak of Fire," was authorized by Trump, Israel’s Channel 9 reports.

Israel confirmed the Doha strike, stating it will continue targeting Hamas leaders.

Israel can hit a target with precision that is 1,000 miles away, but can't take out a stationary TV camera in plain sight that's across the street without "tragically" killing five journalists who publish their videos for the world to see.

Qatar has suspended its mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas toward a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal in response to an Israeli attack on its soil targeting the Palestinian terror organization's leaders, the Gulf state announced Tuesday.

"The families of the hostages are following the developments in Doha with deep concern and heavy anxiety," the  Hostages and Missing Families Forum said.  "A grave fear now hangs over the price that the hostages may pay." 

"The chance of bringing them back now faces greater uncertainty than ever before, with one thing of absolute certainty - their time is running out."

On Monday, an official briefed on hostage deal talks told Reuters that Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani pressed Hamas political leaders to "respond positively" to the latest US-proposed deal during talks in Doha.

"The Qatari prime minister pressed Hamas to respond positively to the latest American proposal, conveyed through mediators, and aimed at securing a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza," the official said.

A diplomatic source told The Jerusalem Post earlier on Tuesday that "Hamas received the new proposal from the Qataris, which we [Israel] obtained from Witkoff last week in Paris.

"The prime minister met with the Hamas leadership yesterday, and they decided to meet again today to discuss the proposal, arriving from Turkey," the source said.

"As it happened before, the Israelis undermined hopes for peace, further prolonging the war and complicating efforts to bring back the hostages," Qatar responded.

Yeah that's bullshit.  It's bullshit and you KNOW it.  The Qatari government has sheltered the leadership of Hamas for several years allowing them to live the high life while their "people" live in squalor in the Gaza Strip.

They weren't just in town for discussions...they LIVE there permanently.

They are never going to let those remaining hostages go willingly...assuming they are still alive.  Just like they will never...eeeeeever consider a peace accord with Israel.
