Army to send 101st Airborne Division soldiers to US-Mexico border

The U.S. Army is sending soldiers with the 101st Airborne Division, 10th Mountain Division and other units to the U.S.-Mexico border this fall.

They’ll be replacing units in the region supporting Joint Task Force-Southern Border, which has about 7,600 troops currently deployed, according to U.S. Northern Command.


The upcoming deployments include the following units:

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Headquarters to replace the 10th Mountain Division Headquarters

The 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division to replace the 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade

The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division to replace the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Division Artillery to replace the 89th Military Police Brigade

The 11th Corps Signal Brigade, III Armored Corps to replace the 35th Corps Signal Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps

The 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, North Carolina National Guard to replace the 90th Sustainment Brigade, U.S. Army Reserve

1. The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Headquarters, "Screaming Eagles"


2. The 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division
The brigade operates a variety of aircraft, including UH-60 Black Hawks, AH-64 Apaches, CH-47 Chinooks, and OH-58 Kiowas.


3. The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, (2ABCT-1AD) is a key component of the U.S. Army's armored forces, currently stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. The brigade is equipped with a range of armored and support vehicles essential for its combat operations, including the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Main Battle Tank, which has been prominently featured in training exercises and operations.

The unit also utilizes the M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle for engineering tasks and other specialized support vehicles to maintain operational readiness.

The brigade's primary combat vehicle is the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Main Battle Tank, which has been documented in various training scenarios, including gunnery exercises and rehearsals.

Support vehicles include the M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle, used for breaching obstacles and minefields during combat operations.


4. The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Division Artillery
The (DIVARTY) is the force fires headquarters for the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky

The DIVARTY is equipped with M119A3 howitzers and M777A2 howitzers. It consists of a brigade headquarters and headquarters battery, a signal platoon, and a target acquisition platoon, which includes AN/TPQ-53 radars [ a solid-state active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, is a mobile, counterfire target acquisition radar system ...  to detect, classify, track, and determine the location of enemy indirect fire, such as mortars, artillery, and rockets, using either a 90-degree or continuous 360-degree sector search; the radar system has the ability to detect and track unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and other airborne threats; the unit synchronizes sensors such as Sentinel and counterfire radars.


5. The 11th Corps Signal Brigade, III Armored Corps
The brigade's primary role is to provide command, control, communications, computers, and internet (C4I) services, enabling real-time battlefield communications for joint and Army organizations. It has the capability to install, operate, and maintain tactical communications networks, establish command center nodes

The MEB is a tailored combined arms force designed to plan and execute protection, movement and maneuver, and sustainment tasks.

The 130th MEB has a dual mission: supporting federal operations and responding to state emergencies.
