Several House Republicans helped their Democratic colleagues in the lower chamber kill a motion to slap Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) with a censure for her altercation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers earlier this year. The incident took place in April.
The Justice Department is prosecuting McIver for assaulting law enforcement officials. However, she has maintained that she did nothing wrong and is alleging that the charges and motion for censure are politically motivated.
In a statement that was delivered on Tuesday after Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) forced a vote on the measure, McIver said, “If House Republicans think they can make me run scared, they’re wrong.”
“We were all elected to do the people’s work,” she added. “I take that responsibility seriously—Clay Higgins clearly does not.”
According to Axios, the House killed the measure by a vote of 215 to 207. The measure itself stated that McIver’s membership on the Homeland Security Committee constitutes a “significant conflict of interest” for McIver, given that the panel provides oversight for ICE.

What’s really shaking things up in our nation’s capital is the list of seven House Republicans who ultimately sided with Democrats, two of whom voted “present” during the proceedings. Higgins forced the vote through the use of a legal mechanism that enabled him to skirt GOP leadership.
McIver’s charges, along with the censure, come from an incident where she and some of her colleagues had a clash with ICE officials during a protest outside the Delany Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey.
