ICE Rips Alleged Misrepresentation of Migrant Case
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has criticized media coverage of alleged illegal immigrant Alma Bowman, arguing she was misrepresented as an immigration activist while her criminal history was downplayed. Bowman has criticized conditions at a Georgia detention facility, and is seeking release through her legal team. The agency has cited revoked permanent residency and past convictions, while Bowman’s attorneys claimed she may have derived citizenship.
ICE detained Bowman after a routine check-in at its Atlanta field office. The agency pointed to revoked permanent residency linked to a bad check conviction and to later forgery, drug, and firearm convictions.
Attorney Samantha Hamilton argued ICE may be violating Policy 16001.2, which requires specific handling when citizenship may be at issue. Hamilton stated, “She is an American citizen, and to lock her up in immigration detention is deeply offensive to her humanity, to the Constitution, and is just plain wrong.”
Hamilton stated Bowman likely gained citizenship based on her birth to a U.S. Navy serviceman father and later residence in the United States. ICE alleged the media has ignored victims of her crimes.
