US Navy launches monster assault ship with 1.2 million-pound payload capacity

Austal USA has launched its first Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessel for the US Navy, marking a major step in the company’s expansion into steel shipbuilding.

The launch of LCU 1710 took place on August 22 at the company’s Mobile, Alabama, facility.

It is the first of 12 vessels under a $91.5 million Navy contract awarded in 2023. Austal currently has three LCUs under construction, with work scheduled to continue into the next decade.

“I am proud of the LCU program team for the hard work they’ve put forth to reach this important milestone,” Austal USA President Michelle Kruger said in a statement.
