Trump Terminates Kamala’s Secret Service Protection

President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, a senior White House official confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The termination of Harris’ security detail will reportedly end by Sept. 1, CNN first reported. Vice presidents typically receive security detail for the first six months after they leave office, though former President Joe Biden signed a directive to extend her protection shortly before leaving office.

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” Trump’s letter reads.

Former Vice Presidents are authorized Secret Service protection for up to six months after leaving office.  The Former Vice President Protection Act of 2008, codified in Title 18 of the U.S. Code, grants this initial six-month protection.

 California Highway Patrol offers Harris security: LA Times

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has offered to provide protection for former Vice President Harris after President Trump canceled her Secret Service protection, according to new reporting from the Los Angeles Times, which cited law enforcement sources.

The Times, in a report published Friday, said the CHP offer came in the wake of discussions between the offices of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D).

The CHP declined to provide further information when reached by The Hill.

“Respectfully, the California Highway Patrol does not comment on security arrangements,” said CHP office of media relations spokesperson Lt. Matt Gutierrez. The office of Newsom, who would need to sign off on the protection, could not be immediately reached for comment by The Hill. Newsom’s office declined to provide further comment to The Times.

A dozen Metro Division officers had been stationed outside Harris’ mansion after President Trump revoked her Secret Service protection last week, ending an extension through which had been quietly granted by President Biden.

By Saturday, the backup was gone, sources told the Los Angeles Times.

The short-lived detail drew fury inside the department after LAPD officers were pulled from crime suppression in the San Fernando Valley to guard Harris.

“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire … and who can easily afford to pay for her own security, is nuts,” the Los Angeles Police Protective League’s board said.

Mayor Karen Bass had directed LAPD to assist the California Highway Patrol in the wake of Trump’s move, which she called an act of “political retaliation.”

The controversy over taxpayer-funded protection comes as Harris gears up for a 15-stop international book tour promoting her memoir, “107 Days,” which recalls her brief 2024 presidential campaign.

Former vice presidents traditionally receive just six months of Secret Service protection, compared to lifetime coverage for presidents.

A spokesperson for Harris did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
