Fire Captain Allegedly Killed Girlfriend And Her Son To Prevent Them From Testifying About Another Crime
Story by Christine Sellers • 18h

A California fire captain has been charged with killing his girlfriend and her young son, authorities said.

Darin McFarlin, 47, was arrested Friday after El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies accused him of fatally shooting an adult and a juvenile male on Aug. 21 inside a Cameron Park home, according to a press release. Deputies found both victims with gunshot wounds; the woman was declared dead at the scene, while the boy later died at a hospital.

The victims were identified as Marissa Divodi-Lessa, 29, and her son, Josiah, according to KCRA News. Relatives told the outlet that Divodi-Lessa had been dating McFarlin. Deputies said another child inside the home was found unharmed, though investigators have not explained that child’s connection to the case.

Prosecutors allege McFarlin killed Divodi-Lessa and her son because they witnessed a crime he had committed and could have testified against him, according to Law & Crime News. The outlet did not detail what that crime was.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Not sure what he was ccovering up, but a double homicide seems like a strange way to 'get out of' something.

About all I can think of that would be more damaging to standing in a community would involve animals or children...in flagrante delicto.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

... McFarlin is facing two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances.

The complaint alleges the mother and son were witnesses to another crime and killed for that reason.

Court documents don't say what that crime was exactly, but it does give some insight into what investigators believe led up to their deaths.  ...
