The mother of the shooter who opened fire Wednesday on a Minneapolis Catholic school during morning Mass has hired a criminal defense attorney, as police said Friday there "has been conversation" with her.

[B5In a news conference Friday, Minneapolis Police Assistant Chief Christopher Gaiters was asked if there's been any contact with the suspect's mother, Mary Grace Westman.

"Through working with our partners, with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension of Minnesota, there has been conversation, and I am not at liberty to go any further than that," he said.[/b]

It comes after Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Thursday that police "have not been successful in talking to the shooter's mother yet."

O'Hara had said Thursday that Robin Westman's family has been cooperating with investigators; however, they have not yet located her mother, Mary Grace Westman. Records show that her residence is in Florida.

He said investigators have done dozens of interviews with the shooter’s family, friends and associates, and have talked to the shooter's father.

Mary Grace Westman's attorney, Ryan Garry, told NBC News on Thursday that he had no comment at this time. The FBI and police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

Authorities often seek to speak with the families of mass shooters as they investigate a motive. In one high-profile case following a 2021 shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan, the parents of shooter Ethan Crumbley were charged and convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced in April 2024 to 10 to 15 years in prison. Their son pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

Police have not said whether Mary Grace Westman or any family members potentially face charges. O'Hara told reporters on Thursday that the department will continue to try to speak with the shooter's mother.

They match up older kids with the youngest...exchanging "HIGH 5's" in the halls or playground, showing them the ropes...teaching them HOW not to fidget, etc..

Robin Westman's stepmother warned shooter was surrounded by 'dark energy'

Robin Westman suggested in a chilling manifesto that her family members should not be surprised by the mass shooting.

'I feel like my mom would have seen it coming due to my rocky past with violent threats,' the Minneapolis killer wrote in the journal.

Another highlighted how the shooter's stepmother recently commented on the 'dark energy' that surrounded Westman.

'The other day my stepmom… said she could feel a ‘dark energy’ around me… if only you know!' the shooter added.

In a separate entry, Westman revealed she decided not to carry out an act of mass violence because the killer did not want to cause pain to her family.

But the shooter's mind later changed and in a recent journal entry said: 'I don’t want to f***ing do this I hate myself. I cannot turn back. I cannot stop myself.'

Referring to him as "she" is at the root of this whole series of events. When delusions break down, violence often ensues, and we have a sh*tload of delusional people out there.

Looks like Mom was in favor of Robert's transition - or she wasn't. She reportedly was pressured by her ex-husband into signing off on it.

She now, as New York Post reports, is cooperating with police to some extent, however.

I'd like to know why Robert's supplies were found at Dad's house. Seems kind of significant, considering Robert had been staying with a friend of late, and not at his father's home.

Investigators raided James' home and seized a tactical vest, media storage devices and a collection of documents from the residence.

According to this source, it was James (Jim) Allen Westman — not Mary Grace Westman — who was the most affirming of Robert’s (Robin) gender dysphoria. Jim is very liberal, as I saw on his social media before he deleted it. Before and after the divorce, the couple’s five children allegedly looked to him for affirmation on choices their mother wouldn’t support.

“Mary Grace was very conservative and Jim was not,” the source says. She had been involved in pro-life activism and had given birth to many children. “Because of this dynamic, the kids always went behind Mary Grace’s back to Jim for approval of doing things she didn’t approve.”  ...

According to the source, the Westmans divorced due to a values misalignment regarding child-rearing. Ms Westman was very much a traditionalist; she had six children in her life, the first of whom, a baby girl, was given up for adoption when the mother was young. Mr Westman worked in tech and was not religious or conservative.   ...

A small group of left-wing protesters heckled Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, as they prayed for victims of the Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday.

Vance, a practicing Catholic, travelled to the grieving community on Wednesday morning, While there, he and Usha prayed outside the building, where a transgender-identifying gunman indiscriminately opened fire at children while they attended a school-wide mass.

Two children, eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski, were killed in the attack. An additional 14 students and three staff members were injured, some of them seriously.

As the Vance family met with victims and prayed outside the building, a small group of dysgenic left-wing protesters showed up outside to heckle them. Many of the protesters held up identical signs reading, “Hate Won’t Make America Great” while others carried homemade signs with messages like, “Fascism Won’t Save Children.”

Additional protesters held up LGBT pride flags, a bizarre image when considering the Catholic School children were murdered by a transgender individual. At least one protester displayed a transgender flag as the vice president made his way into the church, according to footage obtained by on-the-ground reporter Dustin Grage.

Sophia Forchas, a 12-year-old girl who was shot in the head during a mass shooting while praying at the Annunciation Catholic Church in downtown Minneapolis on Aug. 27, could become the third Annunciation School student to die from the attack, according to her doctor.

In a grave update on her condition, Dr. Walt Galicich, a neurosurgeon at Hennepin County Medical Center, said at a press conference Friday that Sophia remains in critical condition in the facility’s pediatric intensive care unit. He said there is a chance she could die, but there are also “rays of hope” that she could survive. Yet, he also couldn’t say for certain what her quality of life would be if she survives.

“I’m gonna be blunt, Sophia is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit,” Galicich said. “There is a chance she may be the third fatality of this event, but the door has been opened a little bit and there are some rays of hope shining through.” ...
