The carriers may indeed be nearing "the end of their era".

But NOBODY with any influence wants to be the one to make the decision to begin taking them out of commission...

I don't think so.  According to the article the reason to get rid of them is because threats to Carriers are being developed.  Their task of denying air superiority to enemies is too important, and until we have a better weapon than fighter jets, we need to keep them and beef up the defensive capabilities of the Carrier groups that sail in support of them to handle the threats.  Aircraft Carriers never sail alone.

Against a third world country they are very useful.

Otherwise, an overwhelming swarm of modern weapons on essentially a fixed platform that can't hide has to be nearly impossible to protect.
