When Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) decided to start a war over redistricting, he did so without considering any of the unintended consequences.

After Texas drew a congressional map that is still less gerrymandered than those in California, Illinois, and elsewhere, Democrats had a chance to de-escalate and accept that they don't get to live by their own set of rules. Republicans would have gained a few pick-up opportunities in 2026, but the landscape wouldn't have changed dramatically. Newsom wants to run for president, though, and that meant he had to get his face in the news.

So he touched off an arms race and now spends his days posting in all caps while moving ahead with a plan to take California's already ridiculous maps well past the point of absurdity. The thing is, when you start an arms race, you'd better be sure you can outproduce your competition. That's where things are quickly going off the rails for Newsom and his party.

According to President Donald Trump, Missouri is now moving to redistrict, and they are one of several red states expected to join the party.

The Second War Among the States has begun!

No need for Massachusetts to redistrict.  2nd most Dem state, behind #1 Rhode Island.

Massachusetts did briefly have (2) Republican US Reps in the 1990s - Peter Torkildsen and Peter Blute.  So, anything is possible.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
We can't redistrict. We only have one Representative in the House.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

RINO chortles:
"The Second War Among the States has begun!"

Even Ray Charles can see what's coming.

It's not going to be just California -- ALL the blue states are going to go to gerrymandered districts, where it's possible to do so. They'll create either a disproportionate majority of blue districts, or... flat-out steal ALL of them. They'll live with any court fights and won't look back.

Of course, in places like New England they don't even have to bother.
But I can see states like Illinois, etc. moving to wipe out their remaining red districts in whatever way they can.

The only possible response for the Pubbies will be to fight back by doing what Texas has just done -- squeeze every possible blue district out in their respective states.

And if the Supreme Court outlaws that part of the Civil Rights Act that supported the concept of racial gerrymandering... watch out. That's gonna work BOTH ways.

So... when this is over and done... the country will have become even MORE "divided", the red and blue states MORE opposed to one another.

It remains to be seen which side will end up with the greater share of Congressional districts. But no matter which side DOES, it will engender hatred and resentment from the "other side", that the numbers are now stacked against them and numerical (read: peaceful) victories in Congress are no longer possible.

Gettin' closer to "that 1861 moment"...

If it gets Ghetto Barbie out it is worth it.
