 What may be the most substantial cool air outbreak since last spring is expected to sweep across the Midwest from Friday through Sunday.

A significant push of cool air from central Canada is forecast to reach the Midwest late this week and expand into the Northeast soon after, AccuWeather meteorologists say. At the peak of this outbreak, temperatures may resemble those typically experienced in late September or early October.

I have been eagerly awaiting the chance to break into my collection of long-sleeved shirts.

The past few weeks have been (admittedly typical for this time of year) quite hot and dry, and I've seen the once-robust water table drop steeply. We got some rain last night and today, thankfully.

So this is some welcome relief.

You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

A refreshing shot of cooler air is set to dive into the U.S. beginning today and into next week, delivering some of the coolest temperatures of the season for millions across the country.

Who’s ready for hoodies and pumpkin everything? Folks in the Midwest, Plains, and even parts of the South will get their first taste of crisp, fall-like air in the coming days.
 
The Weather Setup
A slow-moving cold front will work its way through the northern and central U.S. the next few days. As it pushes southward and encounters the warm, humid air currently in place, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop along the frontal boundary.

A few of these storms could become strong to severe, but we're not expecting an outbreak of severe weather, by any stretch.

Tornadoes, to a small extent, but they're much more common in the spring, when it's the hot air working its way up. There's a small bump in tornadoes in the fall, but it's nowhere near the size you see in the spring.

The colder air working its way down tends to work a little differently. The storms you get out of those tend to be more straight-line. You'd think I'd know exactly why based on what I learned in college, and I probably did even though it's escaping me now, but I can only surmise that it has to do with latitudes: airmasses moving south would be more likely to spread out and north would be compacting. Air compressing into a smaller space would be more likely to rise and convect to make those storms; air spreading out would tend to tamp down any convection. It makes some sort of sense in my head.
