On June 10, the New York Times published a front-page article detailing how the Russian security and intelligence elite are getting extremely uneasy about President Putin’s growing “no-limits” partnership with China.

The full-page Times article, which is based on a leaked document from the top Russian counterintelligence agency, the FSB, goes into great detail about how China has created a widespread spying network in Russia and is extensively recruiting Russian scientists to report back to their Chinese handlers. The FSB, Russia’s “spooks,” refers to China as “the enemy.”


Russia has a centuries-long historical memory of menace from the East. For over two centuries, the Mongols and Tatars ruled Russia. This degrading historic memory of invasion, defeat, and occupation lingers in the Russian mind and was commemorated in a scene from the classic Russian film, “Alexander Nevsky” by Sergei Eisenstein.

The Chi-coms nationalists probably want the Mongolia and the Russian Far-East back.

Russia has aspired to be more European, but that was before the invasions by European nations during the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, and World War II.  France and Britain conspired with the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War to deny Russia direct access to the Mediterranean Sea.

Prior to that Russia was dominated by invaders from the East.

I think Russia is in a No Man's Land between Asia and Europe - it can trust neither as both have been threats to its security and existence as an unified, independent nation; contrasted with its previous history of being ruled by competing Russian principalities.

They're an Asian society, pretending to be a European one

European society believes in rights of the individual, while Asian society cultivates obeyance to the Ruler/State

Russia is now a police-state dictatorship, so clearly it doesn't respect the rights of the individual ... this helps also to explain why Russia just doesn't get along well with freedom-loving Western countries

It has more in common with the Mongol Horde than Europe, in many ways.
They killed off the last of Queen Victoria's downline* there, and the only thing that really left them tied to Europe was the Orthodox Church.

(*King George, Kaiser Willhelm, and Tsar Alexander were all first cousins)
