 European leaders, NATO boss will back up Zelensky at White House meeting with Trump

Top European leaders will be on hand to back up Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his White House meeting with President Trump on Monday amid angst over how the Alaska summit with Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin unfolded.

European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have all confirmed plans to travel to Washington, DC.

It is not clear yet whether all of those leaders will join the actual White House meeting or possibly meet with Trump separately. 

“They’re not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelensky from being bullied,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted to CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “This is such a stupid media narrative… We’ve been working with these people for weeks.

“We invited them to come,” Rubio said.

Trump to meet Zelensky before Europeans join larger session

President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will hold a meeting together on Monday afternoon before they are joined by European officials traveling to Washington for key talks on the future of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Two sources told NewsNation’s Libbey Dean and Kevin Bohn that Trump and Zelensky will hold the initial meeting, which will also be attended by Vice President Vance.

That will be a rerun of the participants from an Oval Office meeting in February that went badly off the rails as Vance and Trump criticized Zelensky over his handling of the war, and for not being more appreciative of U.S. support.

The February meeting immediately underscored fears in Europe that the U.S. under Trump was sliding away from Ukraine and toward Russia over the conflict.

Those fears were revisited when Trump decided to hold a meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a significant public relations win for the leader of the Kremlin, who has been unwelcome in Western countries since the start of the war.

European leaders planning to attend the larger meeting on Monday include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Here’s a rundown.

12:00 p.m.

European leaders are expected to be at the White House by noon EDT at the South Portico, with television crew and photographers allowed to document the arrival.


1:00 p.m.-1:15 p.m.

Zelensky and Trump are set to greet each other an hour after the European leaders arrive, and will shortly after go into a meeting with each other in the Oval Office. Vice President Vance is also expected to attend this meeting.

The last time the three met in February, there were fireworks.


2:15 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Trump will greet other European leaders in the State Dining Room an hour after he begins his Oval Office meeting with Zelensky. Fifteen minutes after the greetings, Trump and European leaders will take a family photo together in the Cross Hall.



3:00 p.m.

Trump and European leaders will then head into their own high-stakes meeting in the East Room of the White House. Zelensky will also be a part of this meeting.

President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to Ukraine as part of a NATO-like security guarantee to ensure Russia does not invade again once a peace deal is settled.

"We will give them very good protection, very good security. That's part of it," Trump said during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Asked specifically whether that meant American boots on the ground, Trump said: “I’ll let you know on that later today.”“We're meeting with seven great leaders of great countries also, and we'll be talking about that,” Trump said, referring to the European leaders who he met with after the Zelenskyy meeting.

“They'll all be involved, but there'll be a lot of help when it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help, it's going to be good. They are first line of defense, because they're there, they're Europe, but we're going to help them out also, we'll be involved.”
