Nova Scotia bans hiking even in private woods, threatens $25K fines

Nova Scotians have been ordered to stay out of their own forests or face fines of up to $25,000.

Simply stepping into the woods, even on private land, is now banned by the provincial government, with similar penalties to breaching a fire ban. The announcement by Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston covered activities deemed “not necessary,” including hiking, camping, fishing and off-road vehicles during a dry spell with conditions that could spark wildfires.

Houston announced Tuesday that a ban on stepping into the woods is now in effect across the whole province, along with other fire restrictions.

“Effective 4 p.m. today, we’re telling Nova Scotians; stay out of the woods. We are restricting travel and activities that really aren’t necessary for most of us, hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted,” Houston said during a press conference Tuesday. “Trail systems through woods are off limits. Camping is allowed, but only in official campgrounds.”

According to Nova Scotia Forest Notes, about 75% of the province is covered in forest.

“If you’re a smoker, for God’s sakes, be mindful of where you’re butting your butt out. If you don’t and you cause a fire, we will hold you accountable,” he continued, “If you have a home or cottage, surrounded by a wooded area. We strongly encourage you to stay out of those woods, regardless of where they are. Please don’t do anything that could unnecessarily put you, your family or your neighbours at risk.”

The measures apply to both provincial Crown land and private land.

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

There goes my vacation plan for next year.

Might be OK next year, this year was historically hot & dry in the Maritimes ... plus, years of Provincial forest neglect allowed lots of waste to pile up, making the situation worse

BTW, the hiking ban is already being challenged in court as excessive ... and at least part of their argument is that the homeless are still allowed to set up their encampments in the forest, including with propane burners!! So there's a lot pf hypocrisy ...

Take your vacation in the Smokey Mountains.  It is better IMHO.

Plus, the Canadians couldn't be a bigger bunch of *ssholes if they tried, they are horrendous.  After my last visit to Nova Scotia, I swore I would never return to Canada.  Idiots,  All of them!!!

Even on YOUR Own PRIVATE PROPERTY is the part that stabbed me the most. It was like forcing folks to wear masks in their own dang car. If you are watching me from my own property, perhaps part of that 75% forested area needs you in a 6 ft. hole.

Leftist Push to Ban Walking Outside Sparks Outrage
by Staff Reports

In what can only be described as another puzzling move by our friends to the north, Nova Scotia has placed a ban on activities in the forest, including peaceful hikes and family camping trips. This decision, stemming from concerns over dry conditions and wildfire risks, seems to target individuals who simply want to enjoy the natural beauty of their surroundings. It begs the question: since when did walking on a trail become a criminal activity deserving government intervention?

Now, imagine telling individuals that a simple stroll in the woods could cost them $25,000. Yes, you read that right—$25,000 for merely setting foot in a forest area. What’s next? A fine for humming your favorite tune too loudly in public? It’s astonishing to think that something as benign as hiking could be met with such a draconian penalty. Granted, exceptions are made for camping at registered sites and essential work, but overall this decision feels less like safety and more like overreach.

Some Nova Scotians seem to accept this development with resignation, as if grandmothers could start fires with their knitting needles while enjoying a lakeside view. Many argue that as long as people aren’t carelessly setting fires, activities like walking should be permissible. But, alas, when did common sense ever deter bureaucratic overzealousness? ...

What happens when all the Canucks get Type II Diabetes and become morbidly obese from lack of exercise?

Maybe the trees should be harvested for lumber before they burn.  You can always plant more.

Then they'll be suicided by the government.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.
