In 'Cringe' Tweet, Newsom Announces California to Draw New Electoral Maps

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California will redraw its House maps after President Trump did not respond to a letter calling on his administration to back off its push for Texas and other red states to carry out mid-decade redistricting.

The post came after Newsom sent a letter to Trump on Monday warning him about redistricting efforts. 

“You are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while knowing that California can neutralize any gains you hope to make," he said.

“If you will not stand down, I will be forced to lead an effort to redraw the maps in California to offset the rigging of maps in red states,” Newsom added. “But if the other states call off their redistricting efforts, we will happily do the same.”

It will be interesting to see who the CHP and California National Guard obey in such a debacle. What's truly sad is that their loyalties to the USA should be in question yet they are.

Newsom is an empty bluff. If he could redistrict the State of California to be entirely Blue/Democrats, he would have already done it. Newsom and his crew do not need a reason to block out Republicans. They always obstruct Republicans as a reflex in any and every avenue available to them, using both legal and questionable illegal means.

The only reason Newsom has not already done his "threat" is because there are legal and procedural obstacles preventing him from doing it. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Trump or Texas. If they could do it, they would do it, regardless of anything Trump does or does not do.

CA's current Congressional districts were basically drawn to create many/mostly "safe" districts by creating D and R enclaves. Breaking up R enclaves could also dilute D enclaves, making some "safe" D districts competitive.

More to the point, by two voter initiatives (passed in 2010 and 2014, IIRC), drawing of districts was taken out of the legislature's grubby paws and a citizen's commission does it instead. Some gerrymandering still happens, of course, just less directly. So the path this forces on Goobernor Noisome is to have a special election (2025 is a non-election-year at the state level) for an initiative that would suspend the current law (constitutional provision?) to allow the legislature to do the redistricting Noisome plans. Due to court challenges and legislature inefficiency, it's doubtful that a new district map could be passed and pass court challenges in time to be in effect for the 2026 Congressional elections. Needless to say, Noisome's Hate-Trump tantrum will be very expensive.

That’s why Assembly members Carl DeMaio, James Gallagher, Leticia Castillo, Heath Hadwick, David Tangipa, and State Sens. Tony Strickland and Marie Alvarado-Gil just fired off a formal request to the Department of Justice. Their letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi calls on the DOJ to investigate “corruption and violation of federal law” tied to Newsom’s redistricting scheme.

“We write to request that the US Department of Justice consider opening an immediate investigation into allegations of corruption and illegality involving members of the California state legislature and their current redistricting scheme,” the letter states. “As you may be aware, California state legislators — upon the Governor's demand — have initiated an unprecedented and unnecessary mid-cycle redistricting effort. Article 21 of the California state constitution expressly prohibits such an effort and public opinion is solidly against the idea of mullifying the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and handing the power back to politicians to manipulate the lines of their own districts.”

The letter continues:

In recent days alarming allegations have surfaced that may explain why state legislators are proceeding forward with such a blatantly unconstitutional and politically unpopular proposal. Specifically, various media outlets are reporting that several members of the state legislature may have not only engaged in drawing the lines of these maps to benefit themselves politically but may be providing their vote for these proposals on the condition that the maps are drawn to benefit themselves. As just one example, KCRA reported that one powerful senator "had one of the new, targeted districts drawn specifically for him in exchange for his support of the redistricting plan."

This kind of backroom dealing and possibility for vote-trading by politicians is the very reason why California voters passed ballot initiatives in 2008 and again in 2010 to take redistricting powers away from the Governor and state legislature.

We believe that the backroom dealings may rise to an unlawful level of bribery and vote trading. It is quite possible that federal laws could have been violated in the scheming surrounding these backroom deals over maps. Aside from possible criminal misconduct, we are also concerned with numerous potential violations of federal law related to the process of redistricting and the proposed maps being approved by the state legislature. Public confidence in the integrity of our state legislature is of paramount importance. As such we ask that you review this matter and determine whether a federal investigation is warranted at this time.
