Active shooter reported on campus of Emory University in Atlanta
Atlanta university issues emergency alert Friday afternoon

Emory University in Atlanta announced an active shooter was on its campus on Friday afternoon.

Students were urged to avoid the area of Emory Point.

"Active shooter on Atlanta campus near Emory Point," Emory College of Arts & Sciences posted to its X account. "RUN. HIDE. FIGHT."

Emory College of Arts and Sciences, the primary undergraduate division of Emory University, has more than 5,700 students.

The Emory University Police Department, DeKalb Police Department and DeKalb County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

The suspect in the shooting on the Emory University Campus in Atlanta, Georgia, is confirmed to be dead, via a gunshot wound to the head. It appears this may be an officer-involved-shooting.

A police officer is dead, and the alleged gunman was killed, during a shooting Friday afternoon near the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus in Atlanta, as nearby Emory University told students to shelter in place and activated its emergency protocols.

Officials didn't identify the Dekalb County police officer killed, but said he was a father of three and was expecting a fourth child with his pregnant wife.

Just before 5 p.m. an unidentified man opened fire in front of the CDC campus, shooting multiple rounds into CDC buildings, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.

Responding officers arrived to find a DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy critically wounded at the scene, Schierbaum said. As they moved in, they heard additional gunfire coming from a nearby CVS pharmacy.

Officers entered the store and found the shooter on the second floor, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The gunman, whose identity has not yet been released, was later pronounced dead.

A shelter in place order was lifted at about 6:30 p.m. However, 92 children remain sheltered in a daycare on the CDC campus, according to officials.

"I want to commend the men and women of law enforcement from all across this region," Schierbaum said.
"When this community needed them, no one shirked from the danger.

"Every officer, from multiple districts, responded and immediately moved to end this threat."

Authorities identified the suspect behind Friday’s shooting at the Atlanta headquarters for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The suspect, 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White from nearby Kennesaw, reportedly claimed to have suffered physical ailments as a result of the COVID-19 vaccine. His father reported him as suicidal to law enforcement hours before the attack.

The gunman was allegedly refused entry to CDC buildings before he posted up at a CVS facing the buildings shortly before 5 pm. He killed a police officer, 33-year-old David Rose, and struck at least four CDC buildings, damaging windows and exterior walls but not injuring employees. The suspect was found dead with a gunshot wound on the pharmacy’s second floor. It is not clear if he was killed by officers or died from a self-inflicted wound. Authorities found five guns at the scene of the crime, including at least one long gun.

ATLANTA — The man who fired more than 180 shots with a long gun at the headquarters of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention broke into a locked safe to get his father’s weapons and wanted to send a message against COVID-19 vaccines, authorities said Tuesday.

Documents found in a search of the home where Patrick Joseph White lived with his parents “expressed the shooter’s discontent with the COVID-19 vaccinations,” Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said.

White, 30, had written about wanting to make “the public aware of his discontent with the vaccine,” Hosey said.
 
White also had recently verbalized thoughts of suicide, which led to law enforcement being contacted several weeks before the shooting, Hosey said. He died at the scene Friday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing a police officer.
