Roy Cooper enters North Carolina Senate race in win for Democrats
by Jared Gans - 07/28/25 8:13 AM ET

Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) is entering the state’s Senate race, a recruitment win for Democrats who hope that the popular former governor will give them a strong chance in one of the most competitive races next year.

He announced his intention Monday morning in a social media post that leaned into attracting middle-class voters. “It wasn’t always this hard,” he said in the video launching his bid.

“I never really wanted to go to Washington. I just wanted to serve the people of North Carolina, right here, where I’ve lived all my life. But these are not ordinary times,” Cooper said.

Cooper’s decision comes after significant speculation that he would enter after eight years as governor in the battleground state. He’ll be trying to win the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Thom Tillis (R), who announced last month that he wouldn’t seek another term in office.

Democrats were already hopeful about their chances of picking up the seat next year as Tillis was seen as potentially vulnerable. He seemed to potentially be on track to lose reelection in 2020 but pulled off a narrow victory after the Democratic candidate faced controversy stemming from an affair.

He is slightly favored to win.  Definitely an uphill battle to retain the senate next year.

Definitely an uphill battle to retain the senate next year.

And the House if Trump’s  approval rating either remains the same and/or continues it’s downward slide

Unfortunately, there are not strong Republican candidates.  Lara Trump was rumored to be in the mix but she bowed out.  One strike against him was that he and his little minion HHS secretary kept the state locked down well past what seemed reasonable during COVID.  But not enough will hold that against him.  Also, with the amount of $ that will pour in for him, he'll probably sail through. 9999hair out0000

Roy Cooper’s Folksy Senate Launch Hides Record on Abortion, Trans Surgeries, School Choice Hypocrisy

North Carolina Democrat and former Gov. Roy Cooper launched his Senate campaign Monday with a folksy video filled with middle-class nostalgia but made no mention of his record of vetoing parental rights protections, supporting transgender procedures for minors, shielding criminal illegal immigrants, and declaring a “state of emergency” over school choice.

Cooper portrays to North Carolinians the image of a humble, small-town lawyer with Sunday school roots. But Cooper’s record as governor tells a far different story, marked by radicalism and culture war extremism.

In his campaign launch Monday, Cooper painted an idealized picture of middle-class life and blamed billionaires and big corporations, claiming he wants to “serve the people” of North Carolina in the Senate. But a full examination of Cooper’s record reveals a different story.

Cooper said the country is facing “a moment as fragile as any I can remember,” yet neglected to admit his own role in stoking fear and division throughout his tenure. From declaring that “North Carolina has had a front-row seat when it comes to the effects of climate change,” to warning that women are “in danger of dying because doctors are afraid of the government coming in and getting between them and their patient,” Cooper has repeatedly leaned into alarmist rhetoric.

He vetoed House Bill 574, which protected women’s sports, by claiming that Republicans were “inflaming their political culture wars” and making “broad, uninformed decisions about an extremely small number of vulnerable children.” He defended his veto by insisting the bill was “neither fair nor needed” and would damage the state’s “reputation and economy.” Cooper also vetoed the Parents’ Bill of Rights and legislation banning transgender procedures for minors. All three vetoes were ultimately overridden by the Republican-led legislature.

Absent from his announcement was any mention of his support for pressuring U.S. pharmacies to distribute abortion pills or his 2021 veto of a bill that would have protected unborn children from being aborted solely due to a Down syndrome diagnosis. He also left out his declaration of a “state of emergency” over school choice, even though he sent his own children to elite private schools, and made no acknowledgment of his claim that wearing face masks “signifies strength” during the pandemic.

Cooper also failed to note that he vetoed legislation requiring sheriffs to cooperate with ICE in turning over criminal illegal aliens, which has allowed sanctuary jurisdictions to continue operating in North Carolina.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has described Cooper as a “radical, pro-Hamas leftist” who consistently sides with the far-left. In 2023, Cooper vetoed legislation that would have removed DEI programs from state government. At the same time, his daughter held a private sector role focused on promoting DEI and ESG initiatives.

President Trump endorsed RNC Chair Michael Whatley for North Carolina’s open Senate seat before Cooper entered the race, calling Whatley “fantastic” and urging voters to send him to Washington.

Whatley has yet to officially announce his candidacy, but Trump’s support, combined with growing momentum from the GOP grassroots, has positioned him as the conservative frontrunner.

Yes, he was a sleazy attorney general and terrible governor whose vetoes were frequently overridden by the legislature.  His wife flipped the bird to lockdown protestors.

The only reason he won is because of the bathroom bill.  You know, the one that required men to stay out of the ladies room.  People in NC's large towns have an inferiority complex with their counterparts in the northeast, and will adopt the silliest positions just to preen for them.

Roy Cooper raises $3.4M in first 24 hours of Senate run
by Julia Manchester - 07/29/25 1:31 PM ET

Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D) Senate campaign announced it raised more than $3.4 million in the 24 hours since launching Monday.

Cooper’s campaign said it raised $2.6 million for his Senate campaign plus an additional $900,000 for the Democratic Party. Ninety-five percent of the individual donations that came into the campaign in the first 24 hours were $100 or less, according to the campaign.

The former governor’s campaign called the haul “a testament” to Cooper’s “strong and deep support across North Carolina.”

“I have thought on it and prayed about it, and I have decided: I want to serve as your next United States senator, because, even now, I still believe our best days are ahead,” Cooper said in his campaign launch video.

Cooper jumped into the race for North Carolina’s open seat Monday in what has been called a recruitment win for Democrats. Sen. Thom Tillis (R) announced last month that he would not seek another term for office, opening the seat.

The field on the Democratic side of the aisle has cleared for Cooper, with former Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.) dropping his bid Tuesday.

“It was an honor to work alongside Gov. Cooper in the state Senate and in Congress,” Nickel said in a statement. “I’ve seen firsthand his steady, bipartisan leadership. He listens, he shows up, and he gets things done.”

A source familiar told The Hill that Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley is set to launch a bid for the seat. The source said President Trump has given his blessing for Whatley to run for the seat after his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, decided against launching a campaign of her own.

I was hoping Lara Trump would run..Michael Whatley doesn't have the name recognition or charisma to win this seat...fingers crossed though.

I dunno how this will break. There's a whole lot of folks pissed off over there by the piss-pour performance of both state and federal response to hurricane damage. There's still folks without roads and power, what, a year or better later?

If that is like here, and I suspect it is, all them hillbillies up in the hollers know each other, are married into each the other. and I will bet you that they all know folks that have suffered greatly.

How that bounces is hard to tell.
