Authorities in Michigan say a man entered a Walmart in Traverse City on Saturday afternoon armed with a folding knife and stabbed 11 people before being taken into custody.

The attack began unfolding at 4:43 p.m., the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office said in a statement posted online.

The victims were being treated at the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. As of Saturday evening, six of the victims were in critical condition and five were in serious condition, the hospital said in an update online.

At a news conference Saturday evening, Grand Traverse Sheriff Michael Shea said the victims include six males and five females. Authorities have not yet provided the ages of any of the victims. ...

As RedState reported, there was a mass stabbing incident at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday.

Officials say at least 11 people were injured, six critically and five in serious condition as of this writing, after a man who is in custody but who has not yet been identified began his attack around 4:45 pm local time near the cash registers. All of the victims were transported to nearby Munson Medical Center for treatment. Some of them reportedly needed surgery.

Described as a 42-year-old resident who acted alone in "random" attacks using a "folding-style knife," the suspect was apprehended thanks in part to "citizen involvement," according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael D. Shea. 

"This was a joint effort all the way through to, as I mentioned, the citizens, and thankfully, no one else was injured.  Eleven is eleven too many, but thank God it wasn't more," Shea stated during the press conference:

Eleven people were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City on Saturday — with six in critical condition — in what a Michigan sheriff said appeared to be a random act. A suspect was in custody, authorities said.
Around 4:45 p.m., a 42-year-old man entered the store and used a folding knife to stab 11 people, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on social media. A sheriff's deputy arrived within minutes and took the man into custody, and people in the store also helped apprehend the suspect and treat victims, the sheriff's office said.

The victims' ages weren't immediately released.

“Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more,” Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters.

Wow.  Times sure have changed.  When I lived in MI, Traverse City was a very remote area where you could pitch a tent, enjoy Traverse Bay and get away from all the hustle and bustle.  There wasn't a Walmart around.

Traverse City — The 42-year-old man suspected of stabbing 11 people on Saturday afternoon at a Walmart near Traverse City was identified by authorities Sunday as Bradford James Gille of Cheboygan County.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg said her office would seek a charge of terrorism against Gille, as well as 11 counts of assault with intent to murder.

Moeggenberg called the mass stabbing "a very random act of violence" that "we believe, in some in some ways, (was) done to affect the entire community, to put fear in the entire community, and to change how maybe we operate on a daily basis."

Police on Sunday identified the 42-year-old man accused of wounding 11 people in a random stabbing spree at a Walmart in Michigan.

Authorities identified the suspect as Bradford James Gille, of Afton, Michigan, on Sunday afternoon. Police are seeking to file terrorism charges and 11 charges of assault with intent to murder against Gille.

Munson Healthcare, northern Michigan’s largest healthcare system, said seven victims were in fair condition and four were in serious condition. Their ages were not immediately provided.

"Over the past 12 hours, we’ve seen encouraging signs of recovery among our patients," the hospital said in an update.
