Army blames showers left ‘wet after use’ for mold in barracks
Iowa National Guard soldiers found mold in the barracks they were assigned to during a training rotation prior to a deployment.

Army officials say mold spotted in barracks showers by soldiers training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, last month was caused at least in part by soldiers leaving “shower areas wet after use,” according to an official memo.

Mold growth was discovered in 43 out of the 49 buildings on the Louisiana base, according to a Directorate of Public Works memo obtained by Task & Purpose. Seven of the buildings had mold growth that covered over 10 square feet of space.

The memo lists the following contributing factors for the mold growth: building infrastructure, HVAC/air distribution, open windows impacting HVAC efficiency, leaving bathrooms and shower areas wet after use, and air drying towels inside.

1. Army blames showers left ‘wet after use’ for mold in barracks

Is there any other way to leave them?

2.  Mold growth was discovered in 43 out of the 49 buildings on the Louisiana base

There are showers in 49 building on the base, and in 43 of them, people used them all the same way? :pondering:

3.  air drying towels inside.

I've never heard of "air drying towels" before.  How do they dry the air?

Whomever is in charge of Fort Polk needs to be relieved of command.

Sounds like they were running a flop house and not an Army base.

I would have thought they would have made new recruits scrub down the showers using Comet and a toothbrush as punishment.

Mold can cause illness beyond allergy asthma.  Certain molds can debilitate or kill people.

Just move the showers outdoors.
