House GOP moves to rename Kennedy Center Opera House after Melania Trump
by Judy Kurtz - 07/22/25 1:35 PM ET

The Kennedy Center’s famed opera house could be renamed to honor Melania Trump, if House Republicans have their way.

House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee approved an amendment to the interior, environment and related agencies annual spending bill that would rename the opera house in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House.”

The panel voted 33-25 on Tuesday to approve the amendment, which was part of a series of others.

The push to pay homage to the first lady came months after President Trump, in an unprecedented move that was met with some criticism, overhauled the Kennedy Center’s board and named himself as its chair after accusing the performing arts institution of being too “woke.”

Both the president and Melania Trump — who bucked tradition during his first term in office and declined to take part in the annual Kennedy Center Honors — attended the opening night performance of “Les Misérables” at the Washington arts hub last month.

Neither representatives for the Kennedy Center nor the first lady’s office immediately responded to ITK’s request for comment about the opera house’s potential name change.

It remains unclear when GOP leaders plan to put the legislation, with the amendment, on the floor for a vote of the full chamber.

Ms. Vance is a trustee of the Washington National Opera and the Kennedy Center. She has served on the board of the Gates Cambridge Alumni Association and as secretary of the board of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

If Melania has an ounce of true class in her manicured finger, she'll quickly reject this honor she doesn't deserve.

She might also want to stop with the socialite shtick and move back with her husband in the White House.  She got her new ATM card.

This is so ridiculous.  Doesn't the GOP have more important things to do?

Really bad idea.  I hope Melania kills this quickly.

It's a silly idea, but I see no reason to criticize Mrs. Trump for something completely irrelevant to this story.

So now Melania is above criticism?  Oh, you silly, sheltered girl.  88devil

The story is about the Appropriations Committee, but you - out of the blue, seemingly - found some completely irrelevant reason to criticize Mrs. Trump. Show us on the doll where she hurt you.

You're taking this awfully hard and personally.  Maybe you should be the one with the doll.

I have to start with the premise that Pres. Trump spoke at length with Melania and Barron well BEFORE this became an issue for some.

She has his blessing!

The man is an aberration, his schedule over a 24 hour period is freakish for any man his age.

And who can deny the sincerity...their holding hands, heads together on the South Lawn Balcony during the fireworks?

Hopefully she'll refuse the honor and request that things remain the same.

See any grandkids watching the fireworks with Granddad?

Remember that parade to celebrate the Army and the President's birthday?  See any kids hugging grandpa or singing happy birthday?

I'm not the one who jumps all over Melania with spittle-spewing vitriol whenever her name is mentioned. Nothing about her life actually affects mine, so I'd say your premise is faulty. And strange.

Nothing about her life affects yours, yet here you are spittle-spewing all over the place.

Settle down.  This is a lovely summer evening.  Go and enjoy it.   happy77

I've been wondering why you have been so anti-Melania. Thanks for the explanation.

I'm fine with it.  She needs to gain 150 pounds and dust off her Brünnhilde corselet, she can open the next season.

Her not living in DC with her husband is one part of the reason. @berdie.   And, yes, I do feel bad for the President (and his grandkids).  ---  But, that's just me.   happy77

Who knows? Maybe he isn't unhappy with the situation as long as she shows up for events. As far as I know, they don't have any grandkids in common so that really isn't on her is it?  I try not to think about the circumstances in a marriage. Especially the rich and famous. Marriages of convenience are common.

I figure, she hasn't divorced him to make him look bad. Even though she has enough personal wealth to live on her own. Myself, I think that The Donald would be very hard to live with, even though he can probably be charming when need be.

I don't know @berdie  I've watched them together since he's taken office his 2nd term and they seem very happy together, she seems much more relaxed and laughs and smiles , he laughs and smiles, heck he's even got her doing the 'Trump' dance.  She has stayed out of the spotlight for the most part and she seems to participate in what she wants to and that seems to be working out for the two of them.

None of the family is involved with his presidency this time around like they were during his first term.
