A woman has been arrested after she allegedly traveled to President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida and told U.S. Secret Service agents that she had “an urgent message” for the president.
Caroline Shaw, 49, of Orlando was taken into custody July 7 on charges of driving with a suspended license and failure to register a vehicle, according to court records reviewed by the Palm Beach Daily News. Trump was in Washington D.C. at the time of the incident, which involved the suspect driving her gray Mercedes van to the south gate of the property just before 10 p.m. local time.
Secret Service agents informed Palm Beach Police, who responded to scene after Shaw got out of her vehicle and approached the gate. Once there, she informed officers that she needed to speak with the president in order to deliver an “urgent message,” according to the arrest report.
Agents recovered a handgun from Shaw’s vehicle after she informed them that she had weapons, court records reveal. Shaw’s Florida driver’s license was suspended April 23, 2023, for unpaid traffic tickets, and her vehicle’s registration expired in December of 2021, the arrest report said.
Shaw pleaded not guilty to the driving-related charges levied against her during her first court appearance before Palm Beach County Judge Donald Hafele on July 8. The judge ordered Shaw not to have any contact with the president or any members of his family, as well as the area around Mar-A-Lago or any of Trump’s properties.
In addition to the misdemeanor charges, Palm Beach Police also filed a petition for a risk protection order to prevent Shaw from having access to weapons or ammunition for at least a year, the Palm Beach Daily News reported. The details of that petition were not immediately available. Florida law enforcement agencies typically file for risk protection orders if they believe an individual may pose a risk to themselves or others.
