IRS says churches can now endorse political candidates from the pulpit
July 8, 2025 | Chris Donaldson

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said that tax-exempt houses of worship can now endorse political candidates to their congregations, a major win for free speech and religious liberty.

In news that was first reported by the New York Times, the agency carved out an exemption for pastors to make political recommendations without fear of losing their tax-exempt status, effectively ending a decades-old ban on such activity.

The IRS’s decision was included in a Monday court filing that intended to settle a lawsuit filed by two Texas churches and a group of national religious broadcasters.

How mighty nice of them to allow freedom of speech again.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Makes you wonder how many ostensibly Christian churches will be endorsing candidates who support abortion or the GLBTQetc. mess...

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I can guess which denominations will jump all over it.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
As the comment up stream indicated, in black churches, they expressed surprise that talking politics in the church was against the rules.  Like, since when is anyone telling us what to say?

While it can be conceived that prohibiting political speech in a church is an infringement on free speech, risking loss of tax free status, with that status, I do not think it is asking much to abstain from political speech.  Church leaders, many of them hold sway over their congregation.  Their focus should be the souls, and not their minds when it pertains to politics.  I believe it is a part of the separation of church and state.  Last thing I want is some religious leader telling me how to think on politics or the significant issues of the day.

All churches have failed miserably with their congregations to allow mass genocide to be the norm in America.  Murdering the most defenseless in our society for the benefit of women's rights is pure evil, and half the religions in America are beginning to embrace this evil practice.  From my mindset, that is the beginning of the end of the USA.

With fixed elections, the republic is gone.  With mass genocide, any God that favored our nation, our people, why would that continue with mass genocide/abortion?  I know I would not favor such a people if I were in his shoes.

What I was going to say.... they never came close to stopping and the IRS/Government never laid a finger on them (for political reasons).

P.S. No such thing as Separation of Church and State. It is a liberal lie that they base on a taken out of context letter.

Yet there were a multitude of Church leaders who lived in fear of losing their 501C3 status and I strongly suspect that will continue to be the case.
