'Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!'

Elon Musk, the world's richest man, is vowing to fund primary challengers against GOP lawmakers who support President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful" bill.

Musk has embarked on an intermittent weeks-long rampage against Trump's sweeping tax relief and immigration bill since departing his role as chief of the president's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in May. He escalated his criticism of the massive budget package Monday, pledging to end the political careers of GOP lawmakers who vote "yes" on the president's landmark bill.

"Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!" the former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief wrote Monday afternoon on his social media platform X. "And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth."

Musk, the founder and CEO of the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, spent more than a quarter of billion dollars in support of Trump's 2024 presidential election effort and those of other down-ballot GOP candidates. The nearly $300 million he spent in support of GOP candidates made the billionaire the largest donor during the 2024 election cycle.

It is no surprise the 'pubbies would fail again to pass meaningful reform.

Maybe Musk has learned a thing or two from Trump.

Will the threat of primarying them get their butts in gear?

Or will they not take it seriously?

An awful lot of people who have voted Republican have done so because they had no palatable alternative. I'm with the 22%, waiting on more info.

Elon Musk made the mistake of trusting Donald Trump. He is one of a long list of people who have been screwed by the guy, going back to the bond holders of Trump's Atlantic City hotels. It is not as if DJT did not have a track record in this regard, so Musk has only himself to blame.

I can see why he wants to get even. But he should lick his wounds, leave well enough alone, and stick to his lanes.

I wouldn't be to quick to dismiss the impact of the BBB on the deficit. We aren't going to know the impact of deregulation, tariffs, and deportations for a couple years.

I agree that the Pubs really missed a great opportunity hiding behind the parliamentarian's skirt and they could have done a lot more but we did get a lot of victories in the BBB.

Yep. The major problem that has been keeping nascent parties down is money. It takes a ton of it to sustain a party through growth to power.

Whatever Musk backs won't have that problem. And he is already bringing receipts wrt what he will do. I will give that a very serious look.

Looking at demographics, and what I feel is a seriatim of political philosophy up the spectra, my estimate is that Musk's little bright idea might mean 50 years of left rule.

What's the source of the "new" debt projection @massadvj  --- what's the time frame and how are economic expansion and tariff collections factored into it? 

Back to Elon:  I wonder if Elon thought he held a magic wand --- forgetting that politics is the art of the possible, not the perfect. 

I also wonder if Elon's outbursts in the Oval Office and West Wing whenever his preferences did not win the internal debate were due to drugs or his underlying emotional shortfalls -- but, Musk sure missed all of Trump's warnings to control his outbursts --- culminating in Musk body slamming Secretary Bessent "like a rugby player" outside the Oval Office --- an outburst directly leading Trump to approve Musk's "departure" because "this is too much".   

It's a pity because many believe, myself included, that Trump would have extended Musk's contract, even if he had to fight for it.  If Musk had emotional control, he'd most likely still be there with DOGE successes breeding more success.  But, now Musk will obsess over getting even with the entire West Wing and help the democrats undo everything he accomplished with DOGE and return the keys of power to them.

But, keep that jerking knee in fighting condition ---- and keep blaming Trump for everything.

Which is a shame since they basically agree on 90% of the issues.

Are you aware that the OBBB raised the debt ceiling by $5 trillion? If the administration really thinks all of this spending is going to be paid for with economic growth and tariffs, why did they raise the debt ceiling?

I know this may sound, well, brutal... but eventually that ceiling is the one thing that might possibly, in conjunction with the expiration of any continuing resolution, force real and permanent spending cuts.

We are eventually going to have to go off that fiscal cliff if we want any chance of restoring any sort of sanity to the federal budget. It is a runaway bureaucracy and efforts like DOGE are a drop in the bucket as to what's needed to fix it... and that, unfortunately, is going to also mean addressing entitlements and military spending. It'll also mean something will have to need to be done to halt increasing interest on existing debt.
