UN official calls for ‘climate misinformation’ to be ‘criminalized’ – ‘Criminalize media & advertising firms for amplifying disinformation & misinformation’

UK Guardian: UN special rapporteur on human rights and climate change, Elisa Morgera, called for misinformation and greenwashing by the fossil fuel industry to be criminalized.

Morgera said states should “criminalize misinformation and misrepresentation (greenwashing) by the fossil fuel industry” and “criminalize media and advertising firms for amplifying disinformation and misinformation by fossil fuel companies”.

The report, from the International Panel on the Information Environment (Ipie), systematically reviewed 300 studies. The researchers found climate denialism has evolved into campaigns focused on discrediting solutions, such as the false claims that renewable energy caused the recent massive blackout in Spain. ... Climate misinformation – the term used by the report for both deliberate and inadvertent falsehoods – is of increasing concern. Last Thursday, the UN special rapporteur on human rights and climate change, Elisa Morgera, called for misinformation and greenwashing by the fossil fuel industry to be criminalised. On Saturday, Brazil, host of the upcoming Cop30 climate summit, will rally nations behind a separate UN initiative to crack down on climate misinformation. ...

“It is a major problem,” said Dr Klaus Jensen, of the University of Copenhagen, who co-led the Ipie review. “If we don’t have the right information available, how are we going to vote for the right causes and politicians, and how are politicians going to translate the clear evidence into the necessary action? Unfortunately, I think the [bad actors] are still very, very active, and probably have the upper hand now.”

If there is to be any debate, it should be based on valid data and conducted as a scientific inquiry, free of the politics of control freaks, the panic of the popular press accounts, and the profit motives of those who would control the assets of the planet.

So far, science has struggled to be heard.

Declaring any part of that discussion 'punishable misinformation' only stifles the debate with dogma, and does not allow scientific inquiry to occur.

Either the data and and conclusions can withstand the scrutiny of vigorous debate, or they cannot, but no politician should ever be given the power to decree what is or is not correct.

Heh.
New York City is on track to have a radical black muslim mayor elected this time around, so won't be any need to relocate for that reason. I believe there are somewhere between 1.0 and 1.5 million muslims already in NYC, anyway...
