Will We Finally See a Persian Renaissance?

Back in 2007 I received a mysterious call at the New York Sun from a man who said he was referred to me from someone at the New York Times. He said he needed to meet with me on an issue too important to speak about on the phone.

The Times reporter had told him that her paper was not the one to cover the story.

Cloak and dagger are not my forte and seemingly against my better judgment, I met with the gentleman who turned out to be an Iranian dissident. He filled me in on what was happening in his native country.

I learned from my new Iranian friend that there was a Persian renaissance in force, which was actively seeking to overthrow the mullahs.

Many Persians, he said, do not consider themselves Muslims and under the tutelage of a Persian professor, they have secretly burned the Koran and returned to their ancient Zoroastrian faith.

The 2011 Arab Spring was a dud.

The Iranians will trade one repressive regime for another repressive regime.

Any attempt to quickly, overtly Westernize Iranian scoiety, culture, and government will be met with a religious and cultural conservative backlash - another Iranian Revolution.

I am old enough to remember seeing Iranian students in college pre-Islamic revolution. 

Even then, 80% of them were bat shit crazed, and acted out on every emotion.  Persian Renaissance?  Not based on any of them still living.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Persia (Iran) and can tell you without equivocation that average people there HATE the Mullahs.

Had them as college classmates.  They NEVER called themselves Iranian, always were Persians.

And one in particular was anxious to land an American wife so he did not have to go back home.
