Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s electric vehicle goals remain a long way from reality as an increasing percentage of drivers have no plans to purchase one.
Whitmer in 2022 adopted a MI Healthy Climate Plan that calls for 2 million EVs on Michigan roads by 2030, as well as 1 million chargers, but EV registration data through May shows the state is currently at only 4.12% of that goal.
Registration data obtained by Michigan Capitol Confidential through a public information request shows the state has registered a grand total 82,484 electric vehicles through May, along with 17,767 plug-in hybrid EVs.
The figure means “for each of the next 55 months, 35,819 Michiganders would have to buy an EV for the state to reach that goal,” MCC reported. “Michigan has a few thousand vehicle chargers. The state’s climate plan says it needs more than 96,000 more.”
