Battle to define ‘America First’ intensifies as Israel strikes Iran

by Emily Brooks - 06/17/25 8:00 AM ET

The ideological battle over what “America First” means in the Trump era is intensifying in wake of Israel’s strikes on Iran, splitting the MAGA right and testing its relationships with the president.

On one side, noninterventionist doves insist the Trumpian tagline means the president must avoid U.S. troops, resources or dollars going toward the conflict, for fear of getting dragged into an endless war.

“Anyone slobbering for the U.S. to become fully involved in the Israel/Iran war is not America First/MAGA,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted Sunday on the social platform X.

But on the other end, foreign policy hawks and supporters of Israel are appealing to President Trump’s position that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, and encouraging him to leave all options — including direct military intervention — on the table.

“How is it not AMERICA FIRST to congratulate those who just made sure Islamists who chant ‘DEATH TO AMERICA’ and who openly plotted to assassinate President @realDonaldTrump never have an opportunity to have a nuke?” right-wing provocateur Laura Loomer posted on X over the weekend.

America First

... you build roads in America before you build roads in Iraq and Afghanistan
... you help American citizens before you help illegal occupants
... you prioritize admitting Americans to universities before importing foreign students
... you prioritize making America a better place to do business before offishoring
... you build the American middle class before building the Chi-com middle class or importing the Indian middle class
... the American Government and Government policy prioritize the needs of America and Americans before helping foreign nations and foreigners
... American sons and daughters are not sent overseas to fight undelcared wars of foreign adventure without a clear definition of victory, without a plan to win the war, without a plan to win the peace, and without a plan to return home with honor
... You build the domestic energy industry before you throw petro-dollars at OPEC nations hostile to America, like Iran and Venezuela

... basically, the opposite of everything Bush '43, Obama, and Biden have done.

The needs of all Americans outweigh the wants of a few elites, oligarchs, and globalists.

Globalism has failed because it was not representative of the needs and wants of peoples and nations.

Trade among nations is a worthwhile pursuit as long as all parties benefit.

The Chi-com / American trade relationship is parasitic.

America trade policy should be focused upon building a system of unilateral trade agreements of mutual benefit among nations in the Western Hemisphere.

No WTO.  No World Bank.  No IMF.  No World Economic Forum.

Let the Ukrainians act as a NATO/EU proxy to blunt Putin's expansionism.

Let the Israelis, Saudis, and UAE act as Western proxies to blunt Iranian Revolutionary nuclear proliferation.
