Republicans launch investigation into Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass
Story by Peter Aitken • 14h
Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have announced a probe into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom's response to protests and riots over the past week.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky and Representative Clay Higgins of Louisiana, both Republicans, sent letters to Newsom, Bass and the Department of Justice on Friday, all of which were published on the House Oversight Committee website.
Newsweek reached out to Bass's office for comment via email on Friday.
Why It Matters
The Trump administration has pledged to carry out the largest mass deportation in U.S. history and has conducted numerous Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, some of which have swept up individuals with proper documentation.
President Donald Trump announced on June 7 that he had authorized the mobilization of 2,000 National Guard members—later increasing that to 4,000—and 700 Marines to Los Angeles after reported violence against law enforcement, specifically ICE agents carrying out deportation raids in the city.
