The Spat vs. the Scandal
Kevin McCullough
It’s truly unfortunate that Elon Musk decided to start a cafeteria food fight this week—because the timing couldn’t be worse, the target couldn’t be less deserving, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Elon Musk, the man who helped reinvigorate the American dream through Tesla, put satellites in the sky with SpaceX, restored free speech to Twitter, and even (somewhat awkwardly) helped steer the cultural conversation back to reality—has accomplished what few billionaires ever do: he’s earned the respect of everyday Americans. He’s been courageous, even patriotic at times, and a huge asset to our country.
But all that makes this week's unprovoked spat with President Trump all the more baffling and disappointing.
After having played a quiet but substantial role in helping Trump’s re-election efforts, and with his leadership on everything from reusable rockets to the digital town square, Musk has created a legacy that could have been celebrated for decades. But this week, it wasn’t reusable rockets or revolutionary cars that were trending—it was memes about Musk and Trump going through a “gay breakup,” JD Vance being dragged into a “bro-vorce,” and who gets custody of Junior’s retweets.
All while the most dangerous political scandal of our lifetime is unfolding right behind the curtain.
