New Initiative Delivers Blow to ‘Sanctuary City’
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli has initiated “Operation Guardian Angel” in Southern California to combat sanctuary city immigration policies. The program allows federal authorities to enter jails and arrest undocumented immigrants. The Los Angeles City Council has designated the city as a “sanctuary,” which prevents city resources from aiding federal immigration enforcement.
Essayli asserted that Los Angeles is not a sanctuary city. His program enables agents to access fingerprint data for individuals booked in county jails, facilitating arrests of those in the country illegally.
Essayli said, “They’ve made it almost impossible for ICE to do their job, issue detainers and get criminal illegal immigrants out of jails. So what we’re doing instead is, we’re going to start issuing warrants.”
Essayli added, “We’re going to flood the system with warrants for criminal illegal immigration that are in county jails. They can ignore a detainer, but they cannot ignore a criminal arrest warrant.”
