Revealing ICE agents' identities could lead to prison under new bill

People publicly identifying federal law enforcement officers could face up to five years in prison, under new legislation proposed by Senator Marsha Blackburn.

"Blue city mayors are doing everything they can to obstruct the Trump administration's efforts to deport criminal illegal aliens," the Republican from Tennessee said in a press release on Wednesday.
 
The Protecting Law Enforcement From Doxxing Act proposes punishments including fines and up to five years in prison for those who publicly identify an officer "with the intent to obstruct a criminal investigation or immigration enforcement operation."

Yeah, sorry but the public has a right to know who public employees are.

Names maybe, addresses, family members, and every other kind of personal information, no. FOIA request, but private parties just doxxing them? I don't think so.

They have a right to know their Job Title and Official Public Government contact information.

They have a right to know general compensation information for the positions/offices they hold.

Personal addresses and family information are only needed by terrorists to intimidate, harass, influence, and harm Goverment officials outside the prescribed public processes available to them.

Swatting should be a Federal Felony if interstate telecommunications were used.  Swatting puts officers and targets at risk of mortal harm.

Doxxing and swatting are tools of terrorists seeking mob rule.

The law makes it a crime to disseminate their names.

Which then makes it impossible to seek redress when they raid the wrong address, kill an innocent bystander, or etc.

In the end it literally makes ICE into a secret police agency.

I have no idea how to approach this but making it a crime to know and share someone's name is nonsense.

This immediately means cops won't have to identify themselves when they stop you or invade your home. And then how do you sue them for redress when you can't identify the cop you need to sue?

You are inviting the establishment of literal secret police. Screw that.

It will die in committee. If it makes it to the floor then the Libertarian wing of the GOP will oppose it.

And rightly so. Too much antithetical crap has been passed into law due to emotional reactions to momentary problems.

The ill-named Patriot Act being #1. This law enabled a surveillance state that Hitler and Stalin would have envied.

And then there's civil asset forfeiture which has enabled literal highway robbery by legions of badge carriers who stop otherwise law abiding people just to steal their cash at gunpoint.

Let's not add yet another such law that will surely be used against the law abiding far more than it is used against the law breakers.

This is politics. I understand what you are saying, but this is using the Dems' own philosophy against them.

To vote no is to state unequivocally that one believes our law enforcement is not worth being protected.

Get a vote on it so citizens will understand who their representatives truly are.
