Warmer summers? Not so fast Axios: nighttime lows, not daytime highs, drive the heat.

In their recent article, “America’s summers keep getting warmer,” Axios claims that hotter summers across the U.S. are “one of the clearest ways we experience climate change.” That statement is misleading. [emphasis, links added]


The article focuses exclusively on “average summer temperatures” while ignoring crucial underlying details — specifically, the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows.

A closer look at the data suggests that rising nighttime temperatures, not dangerous daytime heat, are mostly to blame for the modest increase in “average” temperatures. This pattern is a well-documented signature of the urban heat island (UHI) effect, not global climate change.

This phenomenon was highlighted after 9/11 when all the planes were grounded. Day v. night temps widened because accumulated plane exhaust essentially narrowed and stabilized temp extremes, and unfortunately allowed them to cherry slice half the data to push the AGW fiction.

A solar cycle winds down, the Earth's orbit wobbles a bit, the tilt of the Earth shifts, some significant volcanic eruptions ... the Earth will cool down again.

Climate is measured in geologic time, not Greenwich Mean Time.

In the meantime, lets build some reservoirs, desalinization plants, drainage canals, irrigation canals, energy pipelines, and get on with business.  time = $

I noticed years ago the temperatures getting 'adjusted' in the records were lows, not highs.

I wonder if it is just the heat island effect, or if the data are valid, or if they have been tinkered with.

All you must do is look around at where they place their official data gathering stations and that will be cleared up for you.

The heat island effect is true on its face - But more about how averages are determined... There are far more stations clustered around cities, and far more stations the closer you get to the equator... There are less stations the further north you go... I think that is expressed in the averaging.
