US races to build up to 50 MW nuclear reactors to power military bases, remote sites

The U.S. administration is expediting the construction of the world’s first two microreactor test beds. Named DOME and LOTUS, the two test beds will help reactor developers test their fueled microreactor experiments quickly, safely, and cost-effectively by leveraging existing infrastructure at the lab.

To expedite the process, the federal government has granted the priority rating authorization to Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The new rating builds off recent actions by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to streamline construction projects across the national laboratories to restore energy dominance and help spur U.S. innovation.
