Uproar as America's largest pharmacy chain shuts 270 stores... after closing 900 in just three years

The pharmacy retail industry is struggling.

CVS, the chain with over 9,000 locations across the US, confirmed to DailyMail.com that 270 locations would shutter this year.

The closures, which the company initially announced in October 2024, have been underway in several states, with Alabama, New York, Maryland, and Missouri seeing the largest amount of closures.

A concerned customer wrote on Reddit: 'Where will 540 pharmacists and 810 technicians go then?'

CVS said it does not comment on which locations will close. But the plan is part of a years-long strategy to right-size the amount of pharmacy locations.

In 2021, the company started shuttering 300 stores each year. CVS shuttered 900 US locations in three years.

But it also opened over 100 new locations, including 30 inside of Target locations.

'We’re focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations,' a CVS spokesperson told DailyMail.com.

#1.) This is what happens when you stop selling cigarettes to become CVS 'Health'.  Americans don't want to be healthy; just healthy enough to stay out of the hospital.

#2.) Maybe some of those shoplifters should have been prosecuted to deter other shoplifters.

Watch Walgreens next.  Its decline has been spectacular and a pending offer is on the table to take the company private as it is hanging by a thread.

It decline has coincided with its addition of Valerie Jarrett to the board.

Does that name ring bells?

Actually, in my neck of the woods Walgreens has already made this move. Most are operating in grocery store pharmacies and closed stand alone stores.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that CVS would follow suit. I really think that the only income producing outlet that they had, was the pharmacy.

I will miss the shopping for other items. Although, I'm guilty...I don't shop there often for "fun" stuff. Greeting cards, unusual candy, etc.  Amazon is just too handy.

It's crazy to me, how they can't figure out how to make money with it... Many things can't be obtained by mail order...

I reckon Big Pharma ain't leaving any on the table. Or Big Pharma and Big Insurance together...
