US to accelerate construction of nuclear power plants

The United States is going to accelerate the construction of nuclear power plants. President Donald Trump wants to meet the rising demand for electricity and regain the lead of the US in the field of nuclear energy.

The U.S. was once a leader in nuclear power, but has only built two new reactors in the past thirty years. In addition, existing power plants were closed, while China and Russia are focusing more on nuclear energy. Trump has previously promoted nuclear power as a supplement to fossil energy rather than replacing it.

Nuclear energy is popular with the Democrats because it causes virtually no CO2 emissions, and with the Republicans because it provides reliable electricity.
Faced with the first surge in energy demand in twenty years due to the rise of artificial intelligence, Trump declared an energy emergency on his first day in office.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright has said that the race to develop the energy resources and data centers needed for AI is "Manhattan Project 2," referring to the extensive U.S. program during World War II to develop atomic bombs.
