What may have sounded to some like one of Tim Walz’s recent townhall monologues was actually a commencement address the two-term Minnesota governor delivered to law school graduates on Saturday morning in Minneapolis.

Walz spent a significant portion of his speech in front of University of Minnesota law students—waiting to receive their diplomas—on political rhetoric targeting President Donald Trump, whom he described as a “tyrant.”

“This is what the crumbling of rule of law looks like in real time,” Walz said, referring to the Trump administration. “And it’s exactly what the founders of this nation feared—a tyrant abusing power to persecute scapegoats and enemies.”

Walz also made some historical analogies along the way. At one point, he compared federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to secret police working for Hitler during Nazi Germany.

“Some would say, ‘Boy, this is getting way too political for a commencement address,'” Walz kidded. “But I would argue, I wouldn’t be honoring my oath if I didn’t address this head on.”

“I’m gonna start with the flashing red light—Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo is scooping folks up off the streets,” Walz said. “They’re in unmarked vans, wearing masks, being shipped off to foreign torture dungeons. No chance to mount a defense. Not even a chance to kiss a loved one goodbye. Just grabbed up by masked agents, shoved into those vans and disappeared.” ...

Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz compared the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel executing the Trump administration’s immigration agenda to the Gestapo in a Saturday commencement address at the University of Minnesota law school.

President Donald Trump issued several executive orders to address illegal immigration and border security, including designating Mexican drug cartels and South and Central American gangs as foreign terrorist organizations, and the president has also invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to speed up the deportation of gang members. Walz, the failed Democratic nominee for vice president in 2024, suggested during the speech that Trump is using ICE to implement his immigration agenda in similar fashion to how Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler used the Gestapo secret police to target opponents, according to RealClearPolitics.

“Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo is scooping folks up off the streets,” Walz claimed. “They’re in unmarked vans, wearing masks, being shipped off to foreign torture dungeons—no chance to mount a defense, not even a chance to kiss a loved one goodbye, just grabbed up by masked agents, shoved into those vans, and disappeared.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) slammed Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for comparing federal immigration agents to the secret police of Nazi Germany.

While speaking during a Saturday commencement address at the University of Minnesota Law School, Walz referred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as President Donald Trump’s “modern-day Gestapo,” accusing the agency of disappearing people with no due process. DHS, the department that oversees ICE, called the governor’s comments “absolutely sickening” and “wrong”. “It is absolutely sickening to compare ICE law enforcement agents to the Gestapo,” DHS said Sunday in a social media post. “Attacks and demonization of ICE and our partners is wrong.”

Attacks and demonization of ICE and our partners is wrong. ICE officers are now facing a 413% increase in assaults.
