Look at it...it's going backwards...and there are people all over the masts are they trying to release the sails because it looks like they have an engine failure?

With a tug boat chasing it, from one of the videos. Seems that there was some maintenance scaffolding beneath the bridge that nobody accounted for to clear the masts. It does look like engine failure though.

Wouldn't that be counter-productive?

They were already drifting with the wind (look at the giant stern flag), so letting out more sail would only compound that ...

Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge.
At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries.

Following our preliminary inspection, we can confirm that the bridge sustained no damage and is now open to the public.

Mexico President Mourns Loss of Two Sailors in Brooklyn Bridge Tragedy

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly mourned the loss of two sailors who were killed in Saturday’s tragic Brooklyn Bridge crash.

As Breitbart News reported, a Mexican navy ship with over 270 people aboard hit iconic New York City bridge on Saturday evening, with the losses attributed to the massive 150-foot masts on the vessel, known as the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, hitting the crowded decks as they fell.

The Mexican navy said in a post on the social platform X that the Cuauhtemoc was an academy training vessel. It said a total of 22 people were injured, 19 of whom needed medical treatment.

Early Sunday, Sheinbaum sent her condolences to the loved ones of the two deceased crew members.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in New York Harbor. Our sympathy and support go out to their families,” she wrote on X.

I recall reading that the overall mast height on the sailing ship was about 145ft above the water line.

But I don't believe any of the three bridges in lower Manhattan (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg) have that kind of clearance -- it's more like 120-130ft or so.

I welcome correction from others in the know.
EDIT: just looked it up and the Brooklyn Bridge clearance at center of span is 135ft.

The East River and Harlem River currents can run pretty strong at times. That's where the Hell Gate Bridge got its name from -- the unpredictable waters below.

Quite possible that the currents overcame the ship's engine, or perhaps it experienced an engine failure.

They obviously had lost control, and were slowly drifting towards the pier ... why didn't the Captain immediately order everyone onto the deck to prepare for a hard crash?? Nobody should have been up on the masts or down below!

Sounds like criminal incompetence at a minimum ... and let's hope they didn't put one of the cadets in charge of leaving the harbor, "to gain experience" ...

I found a bit of nerdy data. She's powered by a CAT D399 SASC Engine. Those were built between the 60's and 80's and were known for a few issues, one of which is oil pressure reliability.

Those engines came with 3 types of transmissions. The 7251, 7261, and the 7271, all of which are hydraulicly operated, require between 255-285 psi of oil pressure to function properly.

I bet she lost oil pressure, couldn't go from full astern to ahead, and had no time or room to do anything about it by the time they noticed it.

All the footage I found shows her throwing a stern wake. She had no loss of power. On the contrary. They couldn't take the power of the prop or reverse it.
