Goodbye climate hype!
If we are to believe the experts, the climate is in a bad state. … But it is different than expected: the climate problem is of less and less interest to the population.

By Alex Reichmuth*

Last year, temperatures worldwide exceeded pre-industrial levels for the first time. It seems that this limit will soon be permanently crossed.

At the same time, despite all the conferences, more and more CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Those who consider global warming to be the greatest challenge facing humanity see their position confirmed.

Climate change, the biggest theme – you would think.
But it is different than expected: the climate issue is of less and less interest to the population. This is shown by a new study by the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel in Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Sweden. While the same survey four years ago showed that climate protection was the top priority in the five EU countries, this topic has now fallen to third place on the worry barometer. More attention is now being paid to the problems of economic prosperity and security.

Critical voices everywhere

The loss of importance is accompanied by a growing skepticism about the causes of climate change. In Germany, Poland and Sweden, less than half of those surveyed believe that human activities are the main cause of global warming. At the same time, the percentage of "strong skeptics", who see mainly natural reasons, has risen to double digits in all five countries – in Poland even to 23 percent.
