I think the problem comes from calling Islam a "religion".
I reckon there is that aspect of it, but it just does not stop with worship. It comes with an entire lifestyle, a culture, that will impose itself through lies, deceit, and murderous force if gentle persuasion fails.
While those who see Islam as a religion believe it should be covered under the First Amendment, they ignore the fact that Islam does not regard the First Amendment as being valid for anyone who is not practicing their own form of Islam, and even then it is severely limited.
It is a package, a totalitarian theocracy, not 'just a religion', and ultimately, definitely not a 'religion of peace'. Conquest, by infiltration, displacement, replacement, or the sword is mandated; the jihad is never-ending until the Dar al Islam, when all 'nonbelievers' have been converted or eliminated.
There is no 'tolerance' for other types of thought. There is no compatibility with our Constitutional Republic, rather, a mandate to overthrow it.
While we may tolerate their belief, the reverse is only true insofar as to allow their forces to build to the point where they take over. Then harsh punishment awaits the infidel hordes (that's
US, folks) who ignore this reality and become subjugated under Islamic rule.
