U.S. Inflation Stays Cooler Than Expected, Prices Up 2.3

John Carney 13 May 2025

U.S. inflation edged up in April, less than forecast, defying predictions that tariffs would push prices up at a faster rate.

The consumer price index rose 0.2 compared with the previous month, the Department of Labor said Tuesday. Economists had forecast a 0.3 percent increase following a 0.1 percent decline in March.

Compared with a year ago, consumer prices are up 2.3 percent.

Core prices, a measure that excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.2 percent compared with March. Over the past 12 months, core prices are up 2.8 percent.

Economists had forecast core prices to rise 0.3 percent, up from 0.1 percent reported in March.

The April CPI report is the first since President Donald Trump announced tariff hikes on April 2’s Liberation Day. Some higher tariffs on China, however, have been in effect since February.

NBC News unveils inflation tracker after years of inattention, what’s changed?
May 13, 2025 | Chris Donaldson

NBC News has unveiled a new grocery tracker to monitor the prices of essential items such as eggs, bread, and bacon, despite not being moved to action during Joe Biden’s presidency, four years marked by the worst inflation in four decades.

On Monday, the left-wing outlet proudly announced that it would be monitoring grocery prices, asking, “Are President Donald Trump’s policies bringing down grocery bills?” as Democrats and their media allies desperately grapple to find a line of attack on the president that will resonate with the public.

“Follow price trends using the chart below. NBC News is monitoring the average point-of-sale price for eggs, chicken, bread, ground beef, and other common grocery items, along with how much those prices have changed since April 2024,” the outlet stated in its announcement of the belated inflation tracker.
