Cops Without Citizenship: New Mexico Law Opens Police Force To Non-Citizens

A recent Democratic-backed law in New Mexico seeks to solve the state’s rampant crime problem and shortage of cops by letting foreign nationals become police officers.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on April 7 signed Senate Bill 364, which opens the door for anyone with a federal work permit to serve as a cop. In 2024 alone, the Biden administration issued over two million new work permits to non-citizens — many through hotly debated parole programs with major oversight flaws.
 
Over the last several years, New Mexico has experienced an exodus of cops and a spike in crime, something Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story attributes to the anti-police sentiment stemming from the George Floyd riots.

“That’s an objective fact. You look at our application numbers over time, you can look at state police, Albuquerque or even Portland. It has a lot to do with the environment or the climate around policing especially from 2020 on,” he told the Las Cruces Bulletin.

New Mexico has the highest rate of violent crime in America and the lowest percentage of violent crimes that are solved.

The core of the American peace officer's oath, while varying slightly by jurisdiction, generally includes a solemn promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the state's constitution, and to faithfully discharge the duties of their office. It also emphasizes upholding ethical standards and serving the community with integrity.



Someone explain to me why I should have any expectation of a non citizen honoring this oath, or respecting my rights as an American citizen?

I, too, live in a deep blue state ... Connecticut.

Some years back, I remarked to a friend that, by choosing to remain here, a traditional-minded person accedes to the reality that he/she is willing to be governed by leftists.

So it goes.
I'm getting too old to realistically think about leaving now.

We are looking at a "Trump Renaissance" for a few years, then perhaps continued by a Vance presidency. But it won't last forever.

I don't believe the deep blue states will be "coming back" to the fold.
That's why it might be better to let them go and split America into several "sub Americas" that will go their separate ways.

I cannot see what it would take to "reconstruct" the leftist states back to sensibility.
